Hi Guys,

It's time to retire the wife's ever faithful 2002 Barina. We're not looking to spend big $$$ as the budget is $10k and we have a nice family car already. The wife is a school teacher and the Barina has taken the brunt of parking outside everyday for the last 14 years and kids (inc teachers :cussing: ) bumping into it all the time. It was a great car to not worry about and starts every time without fuss. No aircon and lack of 4 doors has now made it lose its appeal. This car will need to do the run between Gladstone and Brisbane on a monthly basis so comfort with decent fuel economy is a must.

I've narrowed it down to two cars and have test drove both. I've been impressed by both examples. I was initially looking for an Accord luxury but can't seem to find anything in my area (Gladstone) at my price range. Any other cars should we be looking at? Wanting something with leather, cruise and bluetooth for phone calls (but not essential, I can fit an after market head unit to fix this). Budget is $10k max, but less the better.

2007 Mazda 6 Sport Luxury hatch 100,000km's. Full options including sunroof. $9.5k negotiated price, won't budge.

2005 Hyundai Sonata Elite 2.4L 4cyl 75,000km's. Full options, towbar, no sunroof. $6k flat.

I test drove both and I took the Hyundai out first. Both drove beautifully but the Mazda felt nicer to drive. Couldn't put my finger on it but something made it just feel more refined. It was strange because I found the Hyundai quiet and smooth as well. The only thing I could truly put my finger on the mazda that made it nicer was the interior looks way classier and the brakes had better feel. That's all I could separate between the two. Both cars were neat with the Mazda showing a little more wear on the drivers seat than the Hyundai.

Wife says the Hyundai is ugly and the poor girl will be the predominant driver of said cars. I agree with her the Mazda 6 does look a lot nicer. What I'm looking for is a no fuss easy driver much like what our Barina was, but able to carry 2 kids and prams in comfort and easy to throw into tight car parks. Is the quality and the reliability of the Mazda worth the extra $3.5k or is it better in my pocket.

What would you guys do/chose in a similar situation?

Won't find one with luxury spec for under $10k. They seem to attract the Toyota tax in second hand markets. I was looking at Corolla Sportivo's for that price range and you can't find anything with less than 200k on the clock. Toyota's aren't exactly known for bang for $$$.

We have an auto 2007 Mazda 6 hatch & they are a great little car. It was about 1 year old when we purchased it (with approx 10,000- k's). Car has now done 160,000 k's & the only unexpected failure has been an engine mount. The petrol 2.3 litre engine also runs a timing chain instead of a belt - so no expensive belt replacements...

Mazda 6.

Happy wife happy life. The Mazda 6 are a nice car, I've only ever done one long trip in one (about 2500kms) and it drove great. Car was very new at the time, but over took well, was reasonably frugal etc etc

For the cost of a flight down to Brisbane - http://www.carsales.com.au/private/details/Honda-Accord-Euro-2007/SSE-AD-3764943/?Cr=6

There is also the odd VW Jettta 2.0T Petrol around the $10K mark.

Really no comparison in the two you mention, for less hassle a few grand more go the Mazda, least that way you won't regret it later ;)

We picked up a 2011 Cruze Diesel auto with 70,000kms for 10k a few months ago. It isn't loaded with tech and funky gadgets but for a small, 2L auto it hauls arse and does 1000kms to the tank.

I'd have to agree. A Subaru Liberty wagon would be my choice

Just had a look on car sales for your area. You are right it is slim picking up there.

services are exxxie... and you have to check the timing belts have been done every 70K (or is it 80k)

One of my golfing buddies forgot, wasn't getting his serviced at a dealer (coz of the cost) and the belts were not done
the engine repair $ were to be the same as the value of the car... he bought a 2nd hand Cruze from Holden dealer
who towed the Liberty away

How has the Cruze been going for you? Every mechanic that I have spoken to has said to keep away from them but I've noticed a lot of people on this site love them.

Subaru would be nice but I would have thought the AWD drive train would add to servicing costs and be a little thirstier than the contemporary FWD offerings?

Go either the Mazda or Liberty. I had the original 6 when it came out and its a fantastic car. I also have an 07 Liberty wagon for the wife. Good car, but showing its age with the 4 speed auto. Awesome grip.
Its great having an old car, you don't tend to care too much about someone hitting it etc.

What about this, carbon wrapped, and she would be the Queen of All Roads...

Just have to remortgage the house to buy it and maintain the fuel supply, no biggy...

All the school kids would give her all the respect in world, and would know, Who Is The Boss...

Must cost too much to start it up and drive it outside in the sun, to take decent photos of it, that are in focus... Really.....

Don't restrict to your area, last car I bought came from Cairns (and I'm in Brisbane). Even getting something trucked to Gladestone from Cairns or Brisbane shouldn't be more than $3-400.

If your kids are in car seats then something higher might be nicer - http://www.carpoint.com.au/all-cars/private/details.aspx?R=SSE-AD-3774664&Cr=14

The early ones were a bit of a disaster from what i hear. The later Series 2 models seem to be a lot better. (2011 and up)
The Diesels got the biggest drivetrain they make and from what i hear the diesel autos don't seem to be made of glass like the petrols and non turbo models. Ours is auto and is goes good. I would of went a manual but the Mrs want auto for Sydney driving.
