View Full Version : Can MAFLESS 'Over the Radiator' air intakes cause fault codes for MAF? VE

Hi,

Have an SS with over the radiator intake (I think this mafless as it removes the sensor that would otherwise be in the stock intake setup?) and exhaust and (likely) a tune - only reason I dont know exact details is because I don't know the prev owner etc., car threw P0102 and P0068 codes, 'check engine'.

Was fine after sitting for a minute it self checked and got going again, but just wondering if this is a common thing, should a tune have turned off these warnings etc?

Is there a way to stop it doing it or resetting it (battery?)

Thanks!!

Are they the only codes that came up?
It will still log a code but the tune will be programmed not to throw the engine light. So if you scanned it for codes it will still be there but shouldn't be the cause of the light coming on....provided its mafless tuned.

The VE can be maffless tuned two ways, retain maf with iat live. Maff removed with the previous style two wire VZ/VY IAT remotely mounted in the air stream. If it had been tuned, I'd think your fault would be elsewhere.

Yes, they're the only codes. I assumed it had been tuned but am not certain.

Has driven fine the few times since. Thanks

Is it possible the P0102 is always there and it was the P0068 that actually threw the light? If that's the case it may be an airflow/throttle issue rather than the maf.

I'd clear the codes and drive it for a bit. Hopefully the engine light stays off but rescan it and see if the P0102 is in the background. Then when the engine light comes on again you can discard anything that was there before the light came on.

^Thanks.

I am wondering just exactly what MAFless means now though – mine appears to have a sensor on the side of the over-the-radiator intake, behind the filter before the engine.

Does the factory set-up more than the one sensor?

Usually the MAF is combined with an IAT Sensor so when they remove the MAF they fit a standalone IAT, can you post a pic?

And the lead containing two wires that is connected to the standalone IAT sensor in the cold air intake is then grafted to the lead that originally ran to the MAF sensor.

This was the OTRCAI on my car

This is when I refitted the OEM setup – the lead you can see running to the MAF connection was the grafted lead used for the IAT sensor in the OTRCAI

This is a close up of the graft

This is where the lead ran to the IAT sensor located in my OTRCAI

Yep, on the right can u see my plug and the two wires leading from it into the back of the otr intake to the new sensor (approx location marked)?

Is this mafless then, with an air temp sensor wired to the otr intake like yours?

Thanks

Yeah mine is MAFless and yours appears to be the same setup.

In my first photo you can see the MAF plug tied off and the almost impossible to see lead that runs from it to the IAT sensor in the aftermarket CAI.

Mate, give BEST performance a call, tell them your rego details and ask them what mods they did to the car.

Thanks for the good tip haha - no but seriously they closed down years ago and I called the bloke who runs the shop where they are now and no luck.

I might get PowerTorque to have a look over it - just to see if it's even had a tune (you'd think whoever did it - they'd disable the air flow meter if it was tuned correctly) and make sure everything is good.

Ha, I'm glad you said that, it's just sometimes, some people, tend to overlook the obvious.
