View Full Version : VE VCM OTR problems
Are people still have leakage problems with their VCM OTRs. My series 1 was replace by VCM some time ago and I don't drive the car much and only just removed it today to clean the filter and found debris caught by the Maff, its seems to leaking as badly as the old one. I have sent an email and will give VCM a call in few days if its not answered. Has anyone has this problem still occurring as I'm thinking of getting rid of it and putting the standard air box back on as there appears to be lot of dust and dirt getting through, the maff catches the larger bits but the stuff getting through must be doing damage the engine.

It was replaced with the new design or replaced with the same version?
It was replace with a new design but basically the same, just metal insert around the neck were it crushed as well as leaking. one piece, very disappointed with it for the price it was and to fit and service.

Mine is I believe an original blower version and when Chev was doing something on the car last Saturday he noticed the filter had become dislodged (one of the originally noted problems), plus also there was a problem where it goes into the throttle body (another known problem apparently). He basically applied the fixes VCM made in their updates but I am not at all impressed at the thought of heaps of shit being ingested!! :nutkick: It's only done about 14,000km too!

That's just the strengthened original version. They are known to still leak. Get VCM to swap it with the new design.
OK thanks, I have sent an email and will call Steve (if he's still there) through the week if there is no reply. Done a search on the new model and its 2 piece and looks to clamp the filter between 2 flanges. Has anyone got one of the new design VCM otrs and their thoughts on it.
cheers Allan

I thought there was a thread on here about them, there's definitely some on other forums. They work a lot better, similar in design to the Harrop, like you say, sandwich the filter between the two halves

Yes, replacement VCM is two piece and does not leak. Mine was replaced over a year ago with 2 piece version, surprised that they replaced yours with another one piece.

The 2 piece probably wasn't released back then. They've had leaking issues for a long time yet were still always one of the most common OTR's getting around

Probably not. Yes they seem to be popular, and yes the issue has been around for some time. Mine leaked badly, luckily I picked it up soon after purchase. As soon as I presented the purchase proof to Steve a new one was on my doorstep next day.

Is it easy to get the filter out of the two piece one?
I have an old style VCM OTR that has had a few leaks patched up which I'm going to replace soon, am tossing up between the VCM and Harrop OTRs.

Easier than the old one I reckon. Hardest part is removing from the car, other than that it just clips apart allowing filter to be removed. Older one you had to pull out retaining frame and drag the filter out the front of the intake.
Edit: I miss my old Enhanced Automotive LS1 Aluminium OTR, could just pull the filter out the front whilst intake was still installed, was so simple.

Damn, I was hoping you could get the filter out without removing it from the car, getting mine out is a PITA as I have a 4 inch spectre MAF sensor.

Really, how often do you have to get it out? I just clean mine every 5000kms when I change the oil. Gives me something to do while it's draining anyway

Depends on the conditions you are driving in I guess. Like you I do mine every oil change, which due to doing about 7k per year is every 6 months. They do get dirtier a lot quicker than the standard setup though.

I've got a Dus in my VE and no issues at all, for my new VF the Harrop seems good and well priced.

Not that often, but its still a PITA, especially at the drags, I can put the DRs on faster than I can get that damn filter out.
I rang Steve at VCM on Wednesday and he is sending a new 2 piece OTR to replace the faulty one I have. And is also arranging pick up of my old one either to make a claim or take it out of circulation. I will report back on the fit of the new one when it arrives.

I reckon you will be happy with the replacement. Also, good to see that nothing has changed regarding VCM's (particularly Steve) after sales service, I can't think of another business that I have dealt with that even comes close.
I have received the new OTR and installed it. It definitely seats the filter a lot better but I'm not sure on the plastic clips lasting the distance especially the ones on the side as they are very tight to get done up and can see the breaking down the track. Also the housing comes with a sticker saying to check and clean the filter every 2000 klms, which extreme.

You would think they'd put metal clips on it, like a factory airbox

yours is a htv1900 wonky?
I've still got 2 of the original units for our cars here and was thinking of moving away from them because of the sealing issue on the filter at high speed.
