Sorry to ask such a non-mechanical question, but on my limited edition VY SS wagon, the driver's door mirror is stuffed. Clipped a fence post a couple of years back, damaging outer plastic shell and loosening the mirror inside the housing (though electrics still work). But this week at the car wash a momentary lapse in concentration saw the high-pressure jet hit the mirror and the glass all but fell out at last.

I have sourced a replacement complete mirror unit cheap at local wreckers, VZ mirrors are identical.....but....wrong colour. I have a couple of options to proceed, but first....

QUESTIONS:

Can the original red-painted section be pulled off my damaged plastic mirror housing and applied to the wrecker mirror (which is silver, wrong colour)?

A Holden parts diagram (also pictured below) seems to incidcate not, but the wrecker says he has heard of people doing so. Is the painted metal glued to the plastic housing?

The parts diagram also shows that the glass section itself does pull out. How can I do this without any damage...any tips? If I have to I will replace the mirror area only...but it would be great to fit my red painted trim piece to what is a perfect working (silver) mirror from the wrecker.

Thanks for any assistance.

Don't know about the painted section. Though yes the mirror is a replaceable/removable part & only held in by a balljoint & wire guide. Not too difficult to prise them out from the enclosure.

Thanks for reply.

I managed to fix the mirror.

There's no way you can remove the painted section without damage, I don't reckon.

But upon further investigation, I didn't have to replace the whole mirrror housing at alll..

If your glass is smashed, as Micks says the old glass levers out fairly easily, I now know.

In my case, the powered mount that the glass press-fits on to was smashed....the front face of it came away with the glass.

BUT!.....I undid the three little torx screws and the whole powered mount came out of the mirror housing. I detached the power wires (2) and attached them to the undamaged mount I unscrewed from the wrecker's mirror.

Press the glass onto that and ....perfect. Except for the tiny bit of damage to the outer housing of my original mirror. Which i can live with for now.

Posted this just in case anyone else damages a VY/VZ mirror mount and thinks that if the powered mounting inside the mirror housing is smashed, you need to find an entire relacement mirror the right colour. You do not have to. Just just need an undamaged mount, from any colour mirror!

Three torx screws later, I am holding my smashed powered mounting (bottom) ... the frontpiece came off with the mirror glass ..... and the mint one from a wrecking-yard mirror (top)

Eased the 2 wiring connections out of the damaged glass mount and pushed them into the replacement mount, and screwed it back into the housing. Pressed glass on gently and good as gold.
