Guys good mate of mine is kicking off his one man small business & needs to record his activity. I have sorted a pretty solid XL for him but it needs some tweaking to incorporate either monthly or quarterly reconciliation. Anyone in the know please pm on here & will send you what I have. Payment is cash or beers, perhaps both

Jase he's doing contracting too like me. I use MYOB & have done for the last 14yrs, though the mate is just kicking off & doesn't want to spend up big on accounting software or subscriptions atm.

Are you still using the subscription based prog Mick? I am currently for the next couple of weeks but then switching to cloud based (online) Quickbooks , the beauty of cloud based is A. its only around $15 per month and B. it means your bookkeeper and accountant can be given online privileges and you don't need to take your laptop and notes etc.. around to them each quarter for BAS. If you just want a prog for him to use now so he can get used to invoicing etc I would look at downloading reckon from a torrent site (like I did 2 years ago) its fully functional its just that its the US version and you need to add GST in the templates but thats pretty easy . I can send a link if thats the direction you wanted to go for now.

Find an accountant and then find out what he can do to minimise the accountants fees.
He will need to run some sort of cash book which is what you allude to above.
Idealy having that reconcile to his bank statements would be best.

My missus uses cloud based QuickBooks as well. Her book keeper recommended it as it's the easiest to reconcile and do the BAS.

I'm using MYOB subscribed, though my friend is most likely going for a cloud option now. From the discussions I had with my Bean Counter regardless of what program/Cloud you go with it basically needs to be imported to what your Bean counter uses to fullfil your Tax requirements.
