View Full Version : Hit from behind whilst parked

My vehicle was hit from behind whilst parked today by large truck.

Whilst visually there doesn't seem to be much damage, just cracked the plastic cover on the towbar & small scuff on the rear bumper, the car was pushed about a metre & a half forward.

Just wondering if it could of damaged the diff, rear suspension or gearbox, seeing as it was in park with the handbrake on at the time.

Car is a VY Calais.

Had a very similar hit when I had my VY, hit from behind while stopped at traffic lights although I wasn't pushed forward as far as you, visually there wasn't much damage, just a bit of paint off the bumper but when I had it repaired the panelbeater said there was damage behind the bumper that wasn't visible from the outside because the bumpers flex back into shape. I'd say have it checked by a pro if you're not sure.

The bumper can definitely hide damage. get it checked. If the hit was hard enough to push the car against the handbrake then it was a decent hit

Thanks for the replies.

Have lodged a claim with insurance so that should take care of bodywork but unsure if they will look at the mechanical side of it.

I think it probably was more of a push than a hit, apparently the truck was parked behind me & somehow forgot I was there, couldn't see me over the bull bar thus pushing me forward as he pulled away. But good on him for coming in & letting me know, he could of just drove off & I would of been none the wiser.

betcha the hit/push pharked the 'park' mechanism in the auto ( a whack or pressure on the trans breaks the parking pawl and /or its bracket or holder)
and if it has, you have bits of metal floating around the auto. fix is a teardown or a reco init

Exactly what I was thinking.

Just to give an update, the car has been repaired but I can't say I'm really happy.

The boot is still raised on p/s & they didn't replace the missing tow bar cover. When I queried the diff with the assessor he just dismissed me, saying nothing would of happened to it.

Park seems to work ok but there is a random clunk from the diff when moving off from stopped, not every time just sometimes.

Will be contacting the insurer to follow up.

Added FB link, see if it works.

Link not working for me mate, perhaps it only works for your faecesbook friends?

Any decent insurance company will get it sorted for you
if there is anything wrong with the repairs mate,
it's just a pita having to complain when it should have been fixed right in the first place.

Whoops, made it public.

Bodywork they've fixed fine considering the cars age, just don't want the diff to cark it some time down the track because of it.

cheers

Ouch! :banghead:

You weren't kidding about it being a "large" truck!

Looks like it didn't brake the park sprag though because you can see the back wheels were locked up all the way.

Was the park brake on as well?

Yeah, in park with hand brake on.

Park still seems to work fine.

Looks like the truck driver just drove off thinking nobody would have seen it!

What he neglected to say when he came & told what happened but the video recorded was that he did drive off but returned about 20 minutes later to come in & fess up.

Kudos to him for that, I suppose.

Still an arsehole act.

We had a driver take out the front gate at the warehouse and deny it. Paint transfer and damage to the truck supported by video. Driver still tried to deny it.

Maybe he is a bit slow to work out what happened? :stupid::stupid::stupid:

Question, was the truck already there when you parked in front of him? cause there's no way he couldn't see your car over that bonnet, I'd say he's done it on purpose because he thinks you've parked him in, that's why he came back later, had time to cool down and realised what he's done while he had the shits.
You can even see him idle up gently until it touches and then proceed to push the car forward.

No, I was parked there from early in the morning. Also there was no one behind him either. He claimed he just forgot I was there & couldn't see me over the front of his truck. It does seem like a deliberate action when viewing the video though. He approached the cab of the truck from the rear & it was over 2 mins after he got in the cab before he started moving so maybe he was on his phone or something?

No, he's definitely an arsehole (like many truck drivers) who was on his way, but I suspect suddenly remembered there were cameras watching.

I was actually being sarcastic,
I know the only reason he would have gone back would have been
because he was scared about getting caught for not stopping.

Hey accidents happen but driving away was not an accident. :nono:

Wow industrial estates are always trouble.. not just truckers but other drivers that can't parallel park. To vandalism because some jerk thinks they own a public road spot. But this one takes the cake ..... As bad as the one where forklift driver moves a perfectly legally parked car. Unbelievable how someone could be that dumb.

I recognised your sarcasm, but it suited my response to quote you. Sadly with the lack of any situational awareness that many oxygen thieves possess these days your statement is actually a genuine possibility.

I personally doubt that pushing the OP's car was an accident, for me that was just an arsehole who after driving away suddenly realised he might have been sprung. Hopefully I'm wrong though :).

Surprised he didn't go around the block, push you car back then drive off..
