Most of the problems with the early ones were fixed in the first couple of years under warranty.

I reckon the LS1 engine put Holden miles in front of Ford back in 1999

& only Falcons with forced induction have been able to compete with the LS engined Commodores ever since.

I always wondered about those claims that all was fine by the time VX and especially VY came out, particularly the oil burning issues. I remember being out at Coonabarabran for work one weekend in early 2003, walking down the main strip and came across a VY highway patrol car with its bonnet up and the officer was topping up the oil. I tried to ask him about it but he very aggressively told me to mind my own f-ing business, which is why I still remember the encounter today.

Having said that, neither of the VZs I owned ever used oil (LS1 and LS2) and my Dad still runs a VZ Adventra LS1 that's never used oil either, even at 270k, so I guess they did get it right at some point.

I can tell you first hand that the Ford V8 engines from the same era like a drink of oil :booze:

I have one that uses around 500ml every 2,000kms & from what I have seen on the Ford forums that's about normal. :yup:

My redhot VXSS (March 2001) which I bought brand new, used more oil than I expected for a new car that's for sure... it wasn't normal.

But I never worried about it...... and just always kept the oil topped right up, it never lacked any power, and I enjoyed the Hell out of the car Regardless...

Don't have an LS1 any longer, but the guy I sold it to, has only done an oil pump & clutch in that time not bad for a 15yr old vehicle.

I still have my VX R8, I've never used it as a daily. I bought it in June 2006, so I've had it 13.5 years now. From memory my log book is marked as engine replaced at 38,000 Km, when I bought the car it had 68,000 Km on it. It's now only got about 106,000 Km on it. With the engine replacement, I believe that Holden would supply a new block with the same engine number as original. The original block was subsequently destroyed, pretty sure most engine components were transferred from old to new blocks.
Edit, just adding my R8 is a manual, and the HSV VX R8 build number is 161.
