Ford Oz to offer factory blower kit and supercharged Ford Mustang after all

A factory-backed supercharged Ford Mustang could be rolled out as soon as the opening round of the 2019 Supercars Championship in Adelaide on March 2-3.

What’s more, we understand Ford Australia has also overcome the ADR issues that have prevented it from weighing into the lucrative area of Mustang modifications and will not only sell force-fed limited-edition Mustangs via its dealerships, but also offer Roush-supplied Ford Performance supercharger kits as well.

Boasting big numbers – in terms of both power and price, at about 500kW and close to $100,000 – the Mustang we understand Ford will debut in Adelaide is set to be the first of a number of limited-editions the company has promised to launch off the back of its return to Supercars racing with the Mustang.

And rather than go into competition with Australia’s leading aftermarket Ford performance tuner, Rob Herrod, the Blue Oval has instead conscripted his services to develop and deliver the cars.

Ford’s return to Supercars racing with the Mustang was heralded this week with the launch of the racing version in Ford Performance colours.

Ford Performance is the US car-maker’s global hot road and racing vehicle development arm. It played a key role in delivering the Mustang Supercar’s vital aerodynamic performance.

In Australia, the Ranger Raptor super-ute, Focus RS hyper-hatch and forthcoming Fiesta ST are marketed under the Ford Performance banner.

The Ford Mustang was not developed by Ford Performance but is re-classified as a Ford Performance model in Australia when optioned with Track pack.

Ford Performance develops the Shelby-badged GT350 and 350R and will also oversee the GT500 confirmed at the Detroit show.

None of these left-hand-drive-only Mustangs will be sold through official Ford channels in Australia, opening the way for a local high-performance model via Ford dealers.

Strengthening the link, Herrod is Australia’s only accredited Ford Performance dealer.

Herrod has also been engaged to develop Mustang track cars for the new Tailem Bend circuit, The Bend.

In Adelaide, Ford is expected to conduct a speed comparison involving the Ford Performance Mustang Supercar, a Mustang NASCAR (also developed by Ford Performance) and a Mustang road car modified for the track by Herrod.

This could be the limited-edition that Ford intends to launch, a track version of it or a Tailem Bend track car.

But even if the supercharged Mustang special doesn’t front in Adelaide, it won’t be too far away.
