Need advice on diff gears. My vx ss has been making this horrible noise coming from my diff so I decided to buy a second hand 3.47 gears off Gumtree just wondering how hard is it and what's involved if I have a crack at fitting it my self and how much would I be looking at if I was to get a diff specialists to fit it for me.

Get a diff shop to do it or it will end up noisier than what you have now. I'd also have just gone with new gears personally. The poor man pays twice, do it once, do it right.

What's the cost on getting a shop to do it?

Ring a few shops. Probably around $600-800. Again, you may not want to go with the cheapest shop, if it's not set up properly, it will be noisy. Given the cost of swapping them is why I said use new gears. If you want to use second hand gear, it's probably cheaper and wiser to get a complete diff. 3.45 isn't hard to come by.

Yeah a second hand complete 3.46 diff center out of a manual SS might be worth a go if you don't know anyone who can set it up at a decent price.

Don't forget the tune will also need adjustments for the auto gear shifts & speedo calibration.

I’ve been burnt once before buying second hand diff gears. The photos showed very little wear and nothing suspect. Diff gears arrived and had a hairline crack in the crown gear. I contacted the bloke and he told me to F off. I lost that money and bought a new set. That cost time and money which was annoying.

Getting the crush collar right for the backlash and meshing is critical. If the gears are pre worn it will never be right.

I did it myself with my brother once in the garage. It’s so much easier doing it on a hoist.

I would be paying a shop and buying a new gear set. The last thing you want is to put in a second hand set and they whine. Plus at a shop they can change the parameter for your diff ratio.
