Hi all

Am new to the site and am interested in the street meets at WSID.Hav a VX exec with 215rwkw after edit, standard auto and diff.Just wondering if there was an art to the launch in an auto and what times might be expected?Any info would be much appreciated. Cheers

Hi vxls1, welcome to the forum

When launching an auto, its a little like launching a manual. You want as little wheel spin as possible while still getting maximum power down. Depending on how good your tyres are I would stall it up around 2,000rpm and then let it rip.

Thing to never do:

** Bring the revs up in N and drop it in to D
** Floor the accelerator straight away, just pump it right down gentley
** Always have you traction control off

Good luck.

While your all on the subject, what is the best way to launch a manual? No edit or exhaust, but 184rwkw....i obviously aren't using enough revs as it is bog down or it's rear wheel hop city!

Yeah well its very hard to find that balance in the manual. I generally try about 3000rpm with clutch at the take up point drop clutch and give it more throttle at the same time, not quite stomping it but not too far off. Gives a bit of initial wheelspin but gets u off the line quick. Dont release the accelerator back off slightly and do pretty much flat change second. First second is so quick it doesnt tend to hit rev limiter even only backing throttle off a bit. Will result in a bit of back wheel spin again so be ready!!!!!!! Hope that helps.

Road surface and ur rear tyres condition play a fairly large part as well. I havent really mastered the art but a couple of my best launches have been done like this. Not something u wanna do all the time, dont think stock clutch is really up to the task of repeated launches, specially sitting on friction point waiting for the lights to go green.

Im sure other ppl will have different opinions and more experience from a dragstrip point of view.

VXLS1: What happens now if you just nail it ? Does it spin ?

I have an R8 I know it has more weight than an exec but I can basically flatten it of the line , I do bring the revs up just above idle and away it goes.

Good tyres are important ( newish not old ) :burnout:

Thanks. I don't purposely go looking for dudes to drag, but if you got it, you gotta flaunt it occasionally!

It all comes together perfectly sometimes and i think man that was a good launch, now what did I do again, but can't quite recall.

It does get a bit taily and rock a little on the 1-2 change. I really hate that axle hop (bloody IRS, BT1 VR never did it at all) and would even consider welding the axle to the chasis to overcome it (not really though).

I do what :teach: does....anything over 1000rpm will leave you
standing and smoking...there is a sweet spot for staging the auto's...between 6 and 1000 rpm. Mine seem's to work best by holding at 800 rpm then flooring it hard on the 2nd amber light.

thanks for the replies looking forward to going to WSID. Just another thing what tyre pressures in rear should you run?Cheers

I don't know myself but I read on another thread that someone was running 22 in the rear (normal street tyres) to aid traction.

I have only ever run one of my cars at the drags (it was a VN V8 auto) and it had a lot more wheel spin than it did launching on the street so I guess dropping the tyre pressure would help.
