this run on some timing process ?

I always use this function. normally i click it striaght away. but a few time lately I've left it for 1/2 hr or more before pressing it. then i find it only shows the most recent post, and not all the one since my last logon and search.

I have found it to miss a few threads (not necessarily the latest posts) when using this function. Particually those in the For Sale section.

This will be because you have used the forum after a for sale was posted but before it has been validated, so as such it isnt technically a new post as far as time is concerned.

my understanding of it

At the risk of saying "Me too." Me too.

I've been on for an hour (before clicking "show new posts") after not having been on for a day or so, and only end up with a few new ones even though there could be 100 I've not read.

At times when clicking "show new posts" as soon as you log on you'll get say, 100 unread, but before you've finished reading them they're flagged as read.

Weird.

Similiar to above, if you browse the forum before hitting the new posts button this will happen. As according to the forum posts that were made before you browsed are no longer new.

my understanding again

Can I manually search for a specific time?

Eg: if I clicked on the link within the email to read a post/thread, then want to go and read all the new posts since I logged in yesterday at 6pm. If I just go back to the view new posts, I only get the last 5 minutes (or how ever long i have been on THIS session).

Can I put in a date/time format?

Also can anything be done about that 2 letter search limitation. I can't see a problem with having qualifiing conditions, eg: 2letters AND 2letters AND 3letterword+

examples:
VY AND II AND exhaust
VY AND II AND edit

it is VERY limited without the use of 2 letter combo's. I don't expect to be able to search for just 'SS' as it will pickup millions of posts, but at the very least have "2 letters" +" 2 or more letters" etc.

Jeff.

But on other forums using the same software the button is named "Show UNREAD Posts" which AFAIK what it really is, "unread" not "new".
Though I'd don't hang about on these "other" forums long enough to know if they also flag as "read" after a period of time.

The Aus LS1 forum has behaved in this way as long as I've been on it. I thought it was a "bug" (undocumented feature) in the software. :shiner:

I'm pretty sure it works on a cookie based system with a time/date stamp.
So if you (as vt2vx did), leave it for 1/2 an hour and then press the search button, you will only get the new posts in that last half an hour.
I'm not sure what the timeout period is (ie. before a post is deemed to be old).

If that does happen to you, it is possible to retrieve all new posts for that day:

Cheers,
Brad

Sorry, I didn't explain it properly.
If you click on that link, it'll only return the last day's active threads.
I don't know of a way to search for a particular day's active threads.

Or are you saying that when you click on that link, it asks you for more parameters?
