I was wondering if you guys have a kind of standard, not too expensive power steering fluid cooler that you commonly install? Looking for quick and simple, painless exercise here :)
Was at Wakefield Park on the weekend, and noticed a bit of fluid leaking out of the cap. Freaked me out a bit, and made me realise that it was going to be an issue if I wanted to keep going to the track.
... so just wondering if it's worth calling/dropping in to ask for details and price.

Plenty of threads if you search. Try this one from Hymee, complete with pics

Edit: Opps, didn't notice this was in the Sam's forum, my apologies, sorry.... :bash:

yup went through all those before I posted, but I am no DIY guy, and I was impressed with the work Sam has done for me in the past. Would prefer a "pro" install, and was curious if they did that kind of work ...
Edit: hehe no problem, I probably should have been clearer in the first post :)

Would think that if you obtained the bits & pieces, that a reputable mechanic could complete the job as shown by Hymme for you, but if you are not wanting to get involved in the purchasing etc., would think Sam / Tom would assist.

I had a Davies Craig power steering cooler installed for $140. The cooler is a little smaller than the one Hymee used, which may allow for better engine cooling. I saw the kit before they installed it for me and it had everything needed except for a short bit of hose. They come silver, so it had to be sprayed black to blend in. I have done a couple of track days with it now with no dramas.

Budget mod:
Go to Pick a Part, check any EA/B/D falcon automatic for the auto tranny cooler. Its usually mounted on the support panel in front of the radiator.
Should cost about $20, plus you will need to buy some hose and some cleaner to rinse it out.
When you take it off, get the mounting brackets etc.
Its about the same size as the Davies Craig one. Quite easy to fit once you have the front bar off.
cheers

Some of the Vt onwards v6 holdens have trannie coolers fitted to which bolt straight onto the exsisting brackets in front of the radiator

*cough* umm, never mind. I was out at Sam's last night, and it was pointed out to me that the CV8 already has a cooler (albeit someone small and weedy).
So perhaps my leakage out of the cap on the weekend was just a bit of overfill. I'll let it be for a while and see.

AFAIK, they ALL have coolers (VT onwards) but not big enough (just a length of pipe, really) and sometimes located in a place (behind the front crossmember strap on 'old' V8s, for instance) where they don't shed much heat. VT2SS: Good tip on the old EA-ED cooler!

Also ask about using a better fluid. I have forklift fluid in mine as it has a higher boiling point and the steering feel has improved also. Woudnt have believed it until I saw it on some monaro's which are in tassie right now.
If you saw what the standard 'cooler' looks like you would understand why it doesnt work very well.

you can get an old vt v6 cooler from a wreckers to as i mentioned, they bolt onto the brackets that are already there, then run the hose to it.
i run the synthetic trannie oil in my PS, it has a higher boil point also

I wouldn't recommend uing a 2nd hand cooler. Oil coolers hold onto all sorts of shit which you can't clean out and will get picked up at some later date and sucked into the pump.

Yeah learned that the hard way playing with dak-daks and their integral engine oil cooler. If you get a 'known' cooler off a 'clean' wrecked power steering system (ie: no PS malfunctions) you will be okay. hmm maybe a filter would be a good idea
