View Full Version : bearing hub
Hi guys,
Mates car has developed a noise from the front passenger side. His mechanic recons its the bearing hub and has quoted $300 just for the hub. Mate wants to know if that is reasonible for new parts. All i know (which isnt much considering im mechanically challenged) is that its a 97 VS commy v6 with ABS.
Anyone care to hazard a guess if the price is on the money
thanks guys

Yeah that sounds about right. I had one go on my VS just recently. The hub is a sealed unit, so the whole thing, wheel studs, bearings and ABS sensor comes as one. Cost me about $350 to get the job done.

Yeah , the hubs tend to in some cases develop a rumble at post 100,000klms
Pretty easy repair.
Buy the part direct from SKF bearings for around 200.00 to $220.00.As they supply Holden who just slap a genuine part number on it and whack on the 30% mark up ....
Being a 97 model it will have the all formed stub shaft with the outer cap etc being pressed in on manufacture...translation is it is unrepairable...I messed around with these a while back and you can machine off the stub etc inspect the journals and clean and repack using a high quality synthetic grease and 9 times out of ten they are sweet..yet you then need a keeper plate & high tensile bolt etc etc etc..
I have two in my shed that I have repaired and the ones in my VS ute are also ones that I have repaired and they are sweet..no dramas in 20,000klm.
yours being ABS will have a small connection on them which mine won't (non ABS) but a clip is easily whacked on...Where do you live ??I can give you one if you like//as they cost me nothing to do them up..(workshop is magic for these things)

I should clarify that the $350 was the labour and the part included. I did end up getting the SKF bearings, mechanic said it was exactly the same as the one that GMH uses, and as pointed out, at a much higher price
