You are correct it's a VL standard block

The prefix for 5.0lt VLs are

Hi all
Gadjet your first engine number QR69558 is around Oct 71 the other block QL873996 is mid 77 have a look on the block there should be numbers cast into it ie. 23M2 would would decode to 23 12 72 or 82, the prefix in the engine number would tell you what decade. The Q* prefix ran from start of HQ until mid way through HZ April/May 79 then changed to Z*. For a full list see monaroparts.com. If you have any other HQ-Z numbers you need decoded let me know.
Cheers Leroy

i have a 308 with the engine no NT6578
the mechanic i took it to to get a bue slip told me there should be 6 numbers and that he was supposed to dob me in to the rta as the engine is prob stolen but there is definately only 4 numbers and no signs of it being tampered with. i found somethin on the net talking about a nasco short replacement engine but i've never heard of it.
Also, the guy i bought it from (a mat of mine) had it regisered in his ute and had no dramas so i'm thinking old mate is full of crap.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!
