Hi All,

Been lurking for ages, finally go the cash together to buy a decent car.

I was looking in the $35K price range for a VX - VXII SS sedan, until I spotted this on carsales.com last night

My new car ? (http://www.carsales.com.au/pls/carsales/!cs_content.dealer_vehicle?vehicle_id=1649564&current_rec=2&total_rec=47&sort_type=4&make_id=10&model_id=358&badge_id=25820&search_distance=25)

Had a test drive today, and it goes very nice.

Only 40,000 kms and price has recently dropped from 49K to 43K.

Tried to haggle, but was told that 43K was as low as they'd go.

What does everyone think ? Is this a good price ?

I like the look of the VX SS, but I absolutely love the look of the Monaro.

Lastly, the engine did sound a little tappety (not quite diesely, but almost) from outside the car at startup. Is this normal, or is it possibly piston slap ?

Thanks,

Andrew.

For 43k you should be able to get yourself into a VY SS series 1 with not many klms. Others will surely let you know but with the end of year runout sales on at the moment you might even be able to pick up a brand new one for a damn good price.

Cheers guys.

I've managed to control my usual impulsive behaviour and sit back and think about this calmly.

Throughout the whole drive there was something niggling me about the car. The tappety noise got me thinking about it, and there was a slight vibration throught the drive train, which I did not notice last time I test drove a VX SS.

The dealership were quite helpful, and were willing to take a deposit and wait a month me to stump up the cash (waiting for a house sale to settle), but my supsicious side makes me think they wouldn't do that in their right mind, if the car was going to be that easy to sell.

Anyway, I've decide to wait the four weeks till I have the money, and see whats around at that time.

markone2, can you point me in the right direction ? If I can pick up a new (or even low klm ex demo VY) for around the same price, then that might just be the way to go.

The search continues ...

BTW, it definitely is a buyers market, they had a VX Senator with 50K Klms for $39. Now thats a bargain (although I couldn't live with the fake woodgrain dash, and it was an auto :( )

Thanks again,

Andrew.

Wot  no 1/4 mile work on the agenda?.......The auto is faster :D

Nope, no 1/4 mile action.

Wouldn't mind throwing it around queensland raceway a couple of times though :)

I get to drive lots of lovely back roads out to work each day, and don't really venture into brisvegas that much, so a manual is much more fun.

Had a look at near new/demonstrators on carsales ...

Not Bad (http://www.carsales.com.au/pls/carsales/!cs_content.demo_vehicle?vehicle_id=1692857&current_rec=3&total_rec=30&sort_type=4&make_id=10&model_id=19&keyword=SS&search_distance=25)

Wonder how far I could talk 'em down on this ?

And it would be a real pity to have to fly down and drive it all the way back from Melbourne :D

Hmm, very interesting.

I've been thinking overnight, and after a late night visit to look at all the bright shiny NEW cars :)

I've currently got a mazda 323 SP20 on a novated lease (which the wife uses as her work car).

I'm thinking the best plan might be to pay out that lease with cash, and then we would own that car outright (for far less than it would have cost us to purchase it in the first place).

Then I could get the new VY SS on the novated lease and would be able to get all that nice expensive petrol at half price :)

Just have to see what sort of prices are being offered as far as fleet discounts at the moment, and try and judge if its worth waiting for the new model ?

Is it likely that the new model runout discounts will be any larger than the end of financial year runout discounts ?

To be honest, even at the price in the Eagers add, and then taking off the $4K in GST, $40K driveaway for a brand new SS makes for a very attractive lease ...

Yeah, I noticed that last night after posting the link.

If I'm going to spend that much money, I'd want a series II.

In for a penny, in for a pound and all that :)

See above post for latest thoughts.

BooHoo, hurt my feelings, I love my fake woodgrain dash, and I love the light coloured interior, Senators are great vehicles, I won the Loungeroom Class at Wakefield recently in mine....hehehe

Hey PhysoChicken,

No offence intended. Each to their own :)

The car was a great buy at the price.

I'd hate to think how many cows were sacrificed to build each of those senators :)

Edited to say: And how many plastic trees :p

Word of warning Andrew!!!

Be extremely careful browsing this site and asking others their opinions. Because before you know it, you will have a LS1 powered car in your garage with an exhaust your neighbours hate, and over 200rwkW. It happened to me with my VXII SS. This site is very addictive!!! :p

... but then again it isn't a bad thing!!!

For what it is worth, we may be having a car rationalisation at our place due to a new job for Mrs and my Redhot VY SS with 8000km, anthracite leather, 6 speed manual, Noyzworx exhaust (15kw extra at rear wheels), lowered with King lows, factory tow kit, factory tint, mats and first registered in February 2004 (meaning still 33 months of full new car warranty) may have to go. Asking price around $41,000. PM me if you are interested.
