Hey vcar hope you don't mind i borrowed your thread posting

[QUOTE=V-Car]Ive done a bit of research into these and have just purchased a Garmin StreetPilot 2610 from the US.
US$750 which worked out about A$1050.
Had been told to steer away from the Navman.
They are just about to come on the market here for between $2000 and $2500.
Very neat little unit and only needs a cig lighter socket to operate, has a touch screen, and a remote also.
Is also pre-programmed with heaps of restaurants/places off interest etc. all over Oz, and gives turn by turn voice navigation.
When not routing to a destination, it runs in the background, showing speed, direction and what street youre on, and the house numbers as you pass each house slowly.
Ive mounted mine down in the console under the radio, but can sit up on top of the dash in a non-slip bean bag type thing that doesnt move.

Do they have colour screens? Do they have mapping outside Sydney, such as fo Newcastle? The price seems right if that is the case and I would definately like to see more pictures if possible.

Cheers

Yes, the 2610 has a colour touch screen. As for the maps, this really depends on which software you add to the 2610, and you should be a little carefull here, re Newcastle. One software package covers all the metro cities with voice directions, and another seems to cover the regions and country areas, but i dont think it has the voice directions... Some others here may be able to clarify this matter.
I am presuming that the above price does NOT include software.

They are about $1800 (shipped overnight to your door) now that they have been released here.
This price includes the latest Version 5 Australian City Navigator mapping and voice navigation for all major centres in Australia, plus alot of country towns.
There is also other software available called Metroguide, which doesnt have voice navigation, but has more detail in rural areas. It costs about $180.
Here are some sites to look at, and if you need any more info, im only too happy to answer if i can.The pic above is where ive fitted it into my car, and they are a great little unit.

The garmin 2610 sells for 1995, it comes complete with Australian City Navigator V.5 software which has all cities and many regional towns fully mapped and with voice guidance. It has thousands of points of interest like restaurants, petrol stations, ATM's, clubs, motels etc.
I've been using one for some weeks now and it is far and away the best unit I have tried. Much better that the previous model streetpilot III.

Also new from garmin is a model called I-Que that is the size of a palm pilot, it actually uses the palm pilot engine but is a navigator just like the 2610. it also has touch screen and voice guidance and comes with a car kit. It sells for 1495 plus the cost of a sd memory card (about 100 bucks).

I bought mine from the US with Europe software, the carry bag and an external antenna. The external antenna makes a lot of differene when you are driving between buildings and under bridges (not that there are that many in oz).

I also have the US maps which came with it for the price ($740US) and I will buy the aussie maps when I head back there one year.

I love the GPS though, has helped me a lot.

Hello Cruzn2,

Have ordered a Germin 2610 and should arrive this week (fingers crossed) and want to use it in a VX Commodore. Very impressed with the photo of your installation. Did you have any problems installing it? Is it hard mounted? How did you do the electrics? What external aerial do you use? Which map software do you use?

Sorry about all the questions but as I said very impressed with you photo. Looks great!

Many thanks in anticaption,

Noel
