hopefully the occupants were thrown clear before impact...

what never ceases to amaze me though is the way the trees seem to be unscathed when metal meets wood.

100Ks will do the same thing
but of course, as soon as you travel over the speed limit you will automagically crash :p

Same overseas ....
Another one who thought he could "Drive" on the local race track or was that road?
Don't think he will make the same mistake twice,
I do declare him cured - permanently.

I'm quite amazed that the tree is still standing at all!

saw those pics months ago, and there was still a question mark on what type of car it was, besides being a red one...

Trees are strong little creatures aren't they...

Is that definitely a BMW, cause the car in the photo has wind up windows and I can't remember the last time I saw a Bimmer without electric windows. (I thought it looked more like a mid 90's Sierra / Escort)

The base model 318 and 316 a couple of years ago had wind up windows. I couldn't believe it when a guy I knew (up and coming barrister) took out a lease on a new 318 (had to try and fit in socially) and still had to wind the windows himself. :p

Yes it is a Ford Escort...

It's an Escort.

Trees usually survive because cars (and the soft centred occupants therein) tend to wrap around them, absorbing the momentum.

i think the car was some sort of ford, like a sierra or escort or something? I also remember a photo of the speedo, which was at 160km/h i think, so 160 on impact. They were thought to have been going somewhere above 180km/h when it lost traction coming around that corner. The other half of the car is about 30m away.

I don't think it's a BMW, as they have a 5 stud pattern for the wheels (it's has the same spacing as a Commodore) - whereas that photo shows it having only 4. Also, I can't remember whether the model number of a BMW has ever been on the left (which that one seems to be).

There is a web page somewhere on the net that has more information on this incident. Apparently the driver survived as he was thrown from the car..
