Looks like utes are dearer to insure, my VX SS was only half that with RACV
the Victorian equivelant of the NRMA from memory it was under $800, high $700's. Maybe utes have a worse history insurance claim wise.

Utes are more expensive to insure generally. I think it has something to do with their "commercial " status . ie business use , which has always been dearer. Of course utes like the SS and XR have redefined the niche these days and are more cars than utes so to speak, but don't expect insurance co's to play ball with that :booty:
A bit o/t but I cant beleive how much you guys over East have to pay for car Insurance. I am 20, Drive a 2002 M6 VU SS ute and pay full comp of $1400 pa in my name with all the mods on the policy. Sounds like daylight robbery over there.

try Elders Insurance. AAMI wanted $3k for my SS Ute, Elders was $890..... (in Sydney, with mods) They only do commercial vehicles i think, different dynamic claim pool maybe but whatever they were a fracton of the price of the big insurers.

Not sure if you guy's can get Suncorp insurance in Sydney but my new VYIISS ute was only $760 with rating one protection and a new replacement vehicle for 2 years in the event of a write-off. I'm 52, so I'm close to your age "old fella" but not quite there. I do know the area you live in has a lot to do with the price structure.

Heehee, well then you owe me too as I got Samsy (nthnbchsguy) onto Elders ;) - I was spewing he paid the same as me though being the cheeky young whippersnapper he is - mine has jus gone through rego and the insurance went down to $877. Another thing is they dont mind mods either. I have my wheels (rims only) insured for an extra $2500. They've even covered my pedders springs!

Hi guys. I have a VYII ss ute on order and RACWA have quoted $578.39p.a. to insure it for $40000. Thats with protected 55% no claim bonus and only $200 basic excess. I hope it's not a misprint!

I thought I read on here some where that the VU's were a problem as they were not tied into the main stream Commodore line, ie not called VX utes the VY's were called VY's like the sedans etc, VU's were separated from the VX range having the VU tag and thus had its own history for insurance, which maybe is not too good. I am sure there was a thread on here about it. Might be wrong but I thought I read something about it some where. Might be worth jumping on the RACV or equivelant site and get an online quote for a VU and a VY and compare the two.

Just another bonus of living in Perth. By the way, thanks for the tip about utes being exempt from FBT in that thread from last year, forrestd. It made the difference between me getting into an LS1 or not.

The wheels are in motion as we speak. All the parties involved seem to think its OK providing I don't exceed the private use limitations. Nobody is prepared to put any figures or percentages on 'minor , infrequent, irregular', so there's somewhat a leap of faith there. I should get my shiny white M6 with leather in the next week or so when the packaging mob pull their fingers out. Have you had any issues with your fbt exempt experience?

I'm 20, and I'm paying $2200/pa on my VY SS ... I think it is ridiculous the amount they're charging me, but Just Cars wanted $3k and majority of the other insurers didn't want to know me.
"If you can't afford the insurance, you can't afford the car" -- How sad, yet true :(

Its not a ute but the caprice cost $614yr for full comprehansive via AAMI for $44000 cover. No drivers under 25. Lifetime rating one on Max NCB.
Mods covered inc Exhaust, Wheels and Supercharger (to be fitted yet)
TC is classed as a factory item (noted but they didnt see it as a Mod). Diff gears also a factory item as Diff is a Holden unit and fitted by them. Edit classed as a tuneup and not required to be noted
Funny thing was if i fit a Grange front bar they will refer me to Just cars.

Just did a quick online comparision quote with RACV.
Used the same data ie: Suburb, age etc for both quotes.
2002 VY SS Ute, agreed value $35000 - Premium: $988
2002 VU SS Ute, agreed value $30000 - Premium: $1400
Interesting comparision!

no issues with the FBT private use thing, given its under a regular novated lease there is no log book. i wouldnt push anyone for a clear definition on the private use limitations you might find its best to leave it vague with that leap of faith thing...

I pay $1490 p/year full comprehensive insurance and I'm 22! Had a good record so far until I cleaned up a roo last night!! Bugger!
Can anyone tell me if my premium will go up when I make a claim, and if so by what amount?
VILLAIN

If you put in a claim it will probably go up i'm afraid. How bad is the damage? If it is less than your excess and the amount your premium will rise and also it will save you losing one or two rating points it might be worth fixing it yourself.

That's odd. There was an $800 difference between Elders and NRMA for my car (I'm 30 - full NCB) plus NRMA charged an extra $70 for pay by the month. Did you deal with Elders direct or go through a broker? Did you say that your car is used for commercial purposes?
A close friend of mine who put me onto Elders (using a broker) had to make a claim once and had no hassles at all.

It would seem the prices are much more reasonable over here in the West. My SS Crewman costs $690 per year with HBF, that's with 65% NCB plus bonus protection, insured for its on the road price of about $49000. I'm 36 with a clean insurance history.
