Cops cuff crook after six-hour chase
By Penny Baxter
June 7, 2004
A CAR thief hit speeds of 200km/h while leading Territory police on a six-hour, 190km car chase.
The chase ended 5km south of the SA town of Marla.
Police allege a 30-year-old man stole a $40,000 Holden Commodore Sports sedan from the Kittle Bros car dealership at Alice Springs on Friday.
It's understood he convinced staff to start the car so he could "listen to the engine" before pushing a female salesperson out of the way and driving off just before 9.30am.
Six hours later, his dangerous flight ended when he ran out of petrol in bushland 15km south of the SA town of Marla.
Kulgera Police Sergeant Alistair Taylor said the man sped out of Alice Springs towards the South Australian border, stopping to steal petrol worth $25 from the Erldunda Roadhouse.
Sgt Taylor praised the actions of the roadhouse manager, who reported the theft to police and then kept watch for the stolen vehicle.
As a result, police were able to catch up with the car thief and tried to pull him over in Kulgera.
"The man tried to put police off by going north from the roadhouse and then down the road he did a U-turn and came back," Sgt Taylor said.
Sgt Taylor said the man drove dangerously and at speeds of up to 200km/h. "We slowed down to 180km/h and kept following until he ran out of petrol," Sgt Taylor said.
Sgt Taylor said the man probably expected the Territory police to give up when he crossed the South Australian border.
He said Marla police followed fresh tyre marks on a track leading off the highway and found the stolen white commodore.
Police continued to scour the area for the driver, who they found 1 1/2 hours later.
South Australian police are expected to charge the 30-year-old man with the unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

Ah, is it just me, or is there a typo there? 190 km in 6 hours... Average speed, what, 35 km/h? On unlimited roads? Really going hammer and tongs there...
Also, isn't SA a fair amount more than 190 km from the SA border? I could be wrong, as it's been like 8 years since I went through there (plus i was about 12 at the time ;) ) Still a good laugh, though.

It wasn't me, I came back from Alice on Wednesday night :)
Stormwalker, I think SA is 0km from the SA border. Alice Springs is more than 190km from the SA border though I think :P
Anyone for a slightly used white commodore?

Think it means average speed of 190KMH, considering the police slowed down to 180K's and just followed him...

If a guy steals a car and drives 190kms at 200kph how come it takes him 6 hours to do so?

This may just be a silly comment, but would the $25 worth of petrol he stole lasted 6 hours at 200km/h?

Now kiddies, the facts tendered are:
"A CAR thief hit speeds of 200km/h while leading Territory police on a six-hour, 190km car chase."
Let's take another look, shall we?!
That doesn't mean he was doing 200km/h for six hours
That doesn't mean he was doing 200km/h the whole time he was being 'chased'.
That doesn't mean he was being 'chased' for six hours (as in, nose-to-tail pursuit in hwy car, or whatever your definition of 'chasing' is...)
That doesn't mean the police chased him for six hours at 200km/h
That doesn't mean his average speed was 200km/h...
That doesn't mean he was driving for the whole six hours between committing the offence and being apprehended
...And some of you blokes reckon journos are bad!

Guys, I think this is how his lawyer will make his statement sound...
The saleperson was showing me the car and telling me how much faster it was than a Falcon and that there where even red auto ones like this that do the 1/4 mile in 12.45 seconds in QLD.
When I asked for an extended test drive by myself she said no but winked at the same time (the fact the female saleperson has a nervous twitch was not known to my client at the time your honour).
I took that as a yes and couldn't contain my excitment and accidently bumped the saleperson out of the way in my haste to enter the driver's seat.
Whilst on my test drive I noticed the fuel level was quite low so I figured I would fill it up at the local servo. Thinking the car yard would have an account I drove away as I believed it would be added to the caryards tab.
It wasn't long before I had some guys in a white Falcon "all riced up with lights on the roof even" trying to overtake me and making an absolute racket with their musical horn.
I have heard people like that can sometimes carry guns so in the interest of my own safety I unleashed the beast and made myself a speck on the horizon before they could say "Krispy Kremes (or, "Donut King", whatever your preference)".
As I was driving I was thinking about the new Adventra and thought I would take it for a test drive next but having never been offroad in a 2 wheel drive Commodore I would have nothing to compare it with. So I decided to do a little offroading in the car but unfortunately it ran out of petrol. About an hour and a half later those rice boys came along and accused me of all sorts of wrong doings and dragged me away, talk about sore losers.
Anyway your honour as you can see this was all a misunderstanding and I am willing to forgive and forget the whole thing.
I have learn't from my mistakes your honour...next time I'll take the Adventra but I will bring my own fuel in a jerry can, some food and water. :D

I cant beleive a demo car would have that qty of petrol in it. The $25 worth he stole would of bought him about 4 litres in NT so he shouldnt of gotten far.

i work in a car yard - the instruction given to me is
"make sure the cars have a 1/4 of a tank"
that is unless we like the customer, or the boss is using the car, then we fill it up, and if it is a landcruiser with dual tanks, 80 in each :stick:

Dark Blue XR6 Falcons to be exact boys...they do look kinda nice for police cars if I do say so myself...(only dark blue ones in Oz...and if there are any other now, we were the first!)

The SS I test drove was on empty and when I asked the salesperson if we should put some petrol in it he just said don't worry about it, it should be ok. I didn't drive it very far after that but was happy enough anyway and he got the sale.
Oh and I think The Heat would've heard better stories than I can spin before I'm sure :D
Also I'd like to strike from the record any reference to "Krispy Kremes or, "Donut King" your honour :hide:

The car was stolen from where I work and the only part of the related story I know is different to the one being told here.
The car in question is a S pack commodore (V6).
The salesperson (female) was showing the guy the car and he asked if he could hear it running, after starting the car he asked her if he could go for a test drive, (looking her up and down in a creepy way)(her words) she stepped back and said she would get another salesman to go with him, after she stepped back that is when he took off.
The guy who stole the car has appeared in town only very recently and has been trying to clean car windows at the traffic lights, he tried it on my wifes car and she said he seemed creepy.
I dont personally know the guy so I cant say what sorta person he is.
So does anyone wanna buy a low K second hand car?

Also to fill in the gaps... Erldunda is 200k south of Alice... Marla Bore is in SA and is 450k south of Alice Springs... when heading south with the family we usually do Marla in under three hours... so this guy really wasn't trying or retarded :-)
