View Full Version : Brake pad change question

I am about to change the brake pads on my VU SS, and after reading lots of posts have decided on EBC Greenstuff. I do however have a few quick questions.
* Are these the correct part numbers: Front DP21505 Back DP21506?
* When I was reading the other posts on brake pads and changing, someone mentioned potential problems with the ABS when pushing the pistons back in. I have only changed pads on non-ABS cars in the past, so is this a concern and how do I avoid complications?
* Also pricing wise, I used a link to Autospeed and they have the fronts for $164- and the rears for $127- (providing the above part number are correct) , are these good prices?
Thanks guys, Stephen

Prices sound OK. Go here and find your local authorised agent and check the price with them.

Make sure you bed these pads in fully before laying into them otherwise the resin can be drawn out of the pads and deposited on your discs - if this happens you will need to machine them again.
Contact EBC for correct bed in procedures.

I just ordered some front and back pads and the price is about right.
Im sick of the black dust coming out of the Bendix pads...hopefully the Green Stuff will be ok

I had EBC Greenstuff on my previous car ( VT sedan ), and I swear NEVER to use them again. They claimed to be dust free and this is what swung me to outlay the extra to buy them ( the VT was white ). They are NO better than any other pad out there, admittingly they last a bit longer but I was driven insane by the amount of dust they sprayed out. Thats just my opinion.

Ok it seems we have 1 person on the forum driven mad from the excessive dusting from EBC Greenstuff, and maybe 100 or so driven mad from the excessive dusting from the Ultimates
Those braking "performance" aficionados amongst us would confirm that dusting is probably not the primary concern in the braking performance evaluation stakes - 1st being actual braking performance for the stated application (road or track or combo of both), then the effect of pads on the rotors.
But hey I respect your opinion of whatever brake pads you use in your vehicle entirely based on the manner in which they dirty up your car ;)

Do Holden care what type of pad you use for warranty purposes, considering the rotors usually need replacing every 15-30k due to brake shudder? I would like to go the greenstuff but have hesitated due to the fact that Holden may come up with some lame excuse that they caused the shudder as they aren't factory fit.
Also what are your opinions on Redstuff, are they ok for street use with std disc's?
:)
Does anyone know what are the standard Diskpads used in a VX R8. I am looking to change mine shortly too.

In reply to you Mozz, I chose the EBC Greenstuff based NOT on performance but SOLELY on dust emission, performance was never a factor. Sure, I had read the wonderful reviews about them but I was solely after a " LOW DUST " pad. EBC market there product in magazines and shops as " Virtually Dust Free " and I was greatly disappointed when I outlayed hard earned cash only to be less than happy with the results. My post was my opinion, others will form there own opinions after they have used these pads. Maybe I was expecting too much, maybe I got a " DUD " batch, either way, I was only offering my opinion on the topic. By no stretch of the imagination am I able to classify myself as a braking "performance" aficionado.

I wouldnt use greenstuff if you paid me. Barely adequate performance if you've got some decent mumbo, they dust up (but so do all "high performance" pads) and the shudder from the resin or whatever the hell it is, is terrible.
EBC Redstuff are fantastic, although expensive and I found they wear quickly. They dust up more than greenstuff.
Racebrakes RB74 are better than both of them, and have appropriate levels of dust :D

At least the dust washes off easily.
No worries - LS1-UTE - I am sure there are some pads out there with low dust properties - when I purchased the greenstuff pads, I also noticed the low dust advertising. I considered the low dust claims in context of the performance aspects of the pads and the high dusting properties of similar types of performance pads - in comparison with the other performance pads competitors, the greenstuff are low dust.
Modena - I have heard some people like yourself have had issues with the greenstuff and resin hotspots - and that DBA don't recommend greenstuff pads with the dba rotors - but I know many people with this combo - including myself and it works a treat - well at least for normal driving with some regular "spirited" driving cruises and other such driving thrown in. Maybe there are variable quality issues with the pads being sold, perhaps it has to do with the bed in process.

Ill base my own opinon when I put them on on Tuesday on Wednesday.Ill post my opinion after I bed them in say for a week (400 km)
I use the standard brakes including disks but have found the standard pads weren't doing their job and I replaced them after a few months with the Ultimates.
I machined the discs and I lost the shutter I had.
With the Ultimates the car seems to stop much better but I feel they are wearing the discs a little too quickly.
I also bought new mags and have too clean them every second day due to black dust.If I leave the dust on for a week it is hard to get off especially when I had the original wheels on as some where touched up (painted) due to gutter scraping.
I have heard that they aren't as dusty as some and they are also softer on the discs.
I was tempted to buy the Red Stuff but to me they sound like the Ultimates anyway.
I keep thinking of changing the whole set up using 4 spots or something but I tend to change cars often and starting to feel the itch again.
Sorry about the big post.....brakes are very important and I welcome anyone's feedback -good or bad :stick:

Thanks for the replies guys, but any ideas on the potential probs with the ABS when pushing the piston back?

I had no issues with ABS when I did mine. The caliper is well away from the ABS sensors and apart from that you are just moving fluid inside the lines. Nothing untoward. Any way I had no issues.

I was using the EBC greens and found them to be absolutely brilliant in regard to not producing brake dust.

You may want to try out Bendix Metal Kings.. I had good results on my old VP. Good temperature rating (400 deg), well priced and practically no dust to speak of.
If you do a search you'll see EBC Greenstuffs in general get the nod on these forums, but it's critical to properly bed them in. I'm planning on moving to them soon on the SS.. I'll see how it goes.

Fair call. Just to compare - EBC Greenstuffs are rated at 650+ deg C and have a friction coefficient of 0.46. Yes they are certainly advertised as low dust - however they are primarly pitched as a performance pad as well. If somebody is looking for dust free only and has no interest in higher fade resistance and braking force, then I agree with VeeTee346 - go for something like the Metal Kings instead. If you want performance and a relatively dust free pad (compared to most!) then EBC Greenstuffs are great.
Cheers,
Beej
