Hey Sid, It reminds me a bit of a mate of mine years ago (r.i.p. bless his cotton socks)who was a copper with the water police in Sydney. Anyway, they had a work-boat that was powered by a Chev 327 or 350 ( I forget which) which was getting very long in the tooth. They put a request in to the system for a new engine and were asked what was wrong with the old engine. "It's just about stuffed and it's time it was replaced".
"Sorry, due to budget constraints, until it is non-functional, request denied".
Thinks, Hmmm. We'll soon fix that then.
So, they disconnected the cooling system, set it on full throttle, and went off on a job.
When they came back, it was still going like a top. And on and on it went. It took about 6 hours before it eventually ran out of fuel and stopped, and when they went to start it again, it ran, but was very tired. And so they got their new engine..
But, it does show that they were an amazing engine. I could also tell some tales of Formula 5000 engines that ran for most of a race with a busted radiator and ran quite well, and when pulled apart later had the cylinder bores turned blue and the pistons all scuffed, but...still ran ok.
I also wish I could put my finger on the saga in which one of the US mags ran a story about a rented Neon that they put a home-made $50 nitrous kit onto, and ran it more or less to destruction. It was a hoot. Someone here will probably be able to post it up. Dave
