RACQ have published the latest road death causes stats in QLD, these were compiled by Qld Transport.
1. Alcohol / Drugs 36%
2. Disobey traffic rules 29% (not including speeding or drink driving)
3. Inattention 26%
4. Inexperience 17%
5. Speed 16%
6. Fatigue 13%
7. Other 11%
8. Age 11%
9. Rain / wet road 5%
10. Negligence 5%
11. Road conditions 4%
12. other driving conditions 4%
13. Vehicle defects 1%
14. No street lighting 1%
Obviously in a lot of cases more than 1 item has been specified as the cause. The one thing that stands out to me as a road user is the fact that Alcohol and drugs has ranked number 1 for 2 years in a row, with speeding as number 5, yet on average I see 3 speed cameras per week yet I would be lucky to be pulled over for a RBT once a year. This should be ringing alarm bells for all road users as to what the Police put their priority on, which is not the number 1 cause of deaths, only number 5. I am also surprised to see fatigue down in number 6.

Good post Lloyd.
Yeah, I would have thought fatigue would be right up there too. I also note there is not a mention of "sub-standard road " either.

Re the sub standard roads being dangerous - I totally agree. Usually you can judge speed without looking at your speedo if you get up to the cruising speed and then just watch the surroundings. However, with potholes and cracks on the road shaking you around ever 3 seconds, its distracting and hard to maintain a constant speed without staring down at the road all the time.
Wheres the money from the cameras going to???

The top 4 items are all a result of the need for better driver education and training.
