Pulled out the airbox to install the monaro CAI on the weekend. Looks like Holden haven't changed the air filter since the car was new.

I haven't owned the car since new but only just had a 50k service about 2 months ago, thought they would have changed the filter. Anyway bought a K & N filter, installed the monaro CAI & oh what a difference.

Holde will never service my vehicle again!!!!!!!! (Unless under warranty; maybe)

I used to think alot of the people on here were exaggerating a bit when they complain about holden service.... then i went to a dyno day, decided to take out the air filter for those few extra horses....and noticed it was dirty as hell! And it had only had the 100,000 service a few weeks ago! (edit: it looked like 40,000kms worth of dirt/crap, not just a bit dirty...)

I agree with what the dyno operator said when i said it was just serviced at the dealer..."Give that up right now!" :D

I think the recommended service intervals for airfilter is like 40,000 and most dont even bother to check anymore cause everyones got a K&N these days

I took my car in for warranty for steering problems and they broke my ss induction throttle maf pipe.Didn't notice this for about 2 days until I washed the car.
They didn't admit to it so I had to buy another one (bought GTS one) It might have been cheaper if I replaced the rack myself as the problem is still there and they charged me $50 to rent one of their cars.

that's a bit of a bold statement. remember that not all owners of cars are into performance. most just buy a car to go places.

My VX is now out of warranty so I've started taking it to a competant mechanic ie not a Holden Dealer.

When I went to collect her from her 70,000km service they had kept the air filter aside for me to see it and I swear it looked like something pulled out of an 18th century coal fire chimney - I couldn't believe how festy it was.

I honestly think it had never been changed previously.

Makes you wonder if some of the service guys know anything about what they are doing if an air filter looked like that after a service..

A dirty airfilter will start letting dirt into the intake and a sure way to ruin the bores nice and fast.

I saw this on a mates VT and there was a black film of dirt all the way though the intake and thottle body!

No wonder he has problems now.

Makes me wonder is some people had found their oil was not changed either.

Oh yeah forgot to add, took about 10 minutes to clean out the MAF. The little transducers were covered with black crap that I had to carefully remove with a cotton bud and metho. Car then finally idled correctly.

its not wether the services guys know what they are doing, they are usually very competent guys
but they might be lazy and overlook it..

Probably not lazy, more likely just pushed/over booked...

I know every time ive taken my car to the dealer to get it serviced, ive always had to wait about 1hr after they supposedly close to get my car, and im not the only one waiting either... I think they just overbook and then skip something here and there to save time..... Which is why im now looking for a decent/competent mechanic to do my services.

I booked the car in for a service & they asked me drop the car off at 8am, I asked when I could pick up the car as I needed it back at lunch time - not an unfair time frame for a standard service I think. They said no they would require the car till 5pm that day. I was assured that it would be first off the rank in the morning, but correct me if I'm wrong but a "competant" mechanic should not need 9hrs to conduct a service. Lazy, overbooked & INCOMPETANT!!! describes dealer mechanics.

These guys don't service cars, they find ways to rip off the consumer. Charge for a part & not replace it, but definately replace expensive parts that are in good working order - this unfortunately seems to be their motto. Did I mention that they told me my air conditioner compressor needed replacing at $1300!!! Turns out it was a faulty valve at $280.

Not a problem I will have to deal with any more, cause I won't use 'em.

Sorry guys, just venting some frustration.

Please forgive my ignorance but what is a CAI and what does it do for your car?

cheers

No probs Smootman.

CAI is just short for Cold Air Intake. (Air ducted from outside of the engine bay)

Cold air or air taken from outside from the engine bay will increase power. Cooler air creates a more dense fuel mixture which in turn will give better power output. Hot air inside the engine bay robs power and increases chances of detination problems.

Many of us have found also this to be true as on a cold night many cars feel more responsive on the road due to the cooler air.

Just drop a search on the forums here, heaps on CAI's and what people have tried and recommend.

You guys need to be a little tempered with your criticism. The maintenance schedule clearly states that the air filter is replaced at the 40,000kms, 80,000km, etc services. The assumptions are that all servicing will be carried out at the recommended intervals and that an air filter will last 40,000kms under normal operation. There is an abnormal maintenance schedule which recommends that the filter be replaced every 20,000kms if it it used on dusty or loose gravel roads.

You may think that it's reasonable for the air filter to be checked and cleaned/replaced every service but that's not what's in the maintenance schedule. Likewise if you miss the 40,000kms or 80,000kms services your car will not have had its air filter replaced (or had any of the other things that were supposed to have been done at that mileage).

Bottom line is that service is done by the book. If you want anything extra you have to ask and (presumably) will be charged for the extra cost involved. If you have missed a service you need to tell the service people when you book your car in (and also when you take it in for a service, and it also helps to leave notes in the car).

Whether this is reasonable or value for money or whether the service people are competent are completely separate issues. Just my 2c (note that I do most of my own servicing).

No one did anything to my car and 2 of those broke all by themselves. If you do a search you'll find that it isn't uncommon.

I would like to know what the service people did to my car though because it went like a dog for the week after the last service.
In the end I did a reset and chucked some octane boost in it to break it out of it's bad habits. Now that the weather has gone cold as well it's going better than it ever has.

well said. Although I do my own servicing, too... and ask for SPECIFICS (such as fuel filter or fluid changes) when I get stuff done by a (good) mechnanic

Yes, they are quite fragile (I have gone thru 2). The
new and improved one is supposed to be on the streets,
but I still havent seen one. Anyone recieved one off
SS Ind yet?

WE got a VXSII Exec at the SA Govt Auctions in April - 2 years old 11.5K on the clock - service books showed it had been "serviced" regularly by an accredited SA Holden Dealer but prior to it being driven to Darwin, I had the car checked - the air cleaner element was totally clogged with good old SA dust. I reckon it had never been checked in the 2 years

I think SS ind had the new MAF pipe on their display car at the Holden Vs Ford show in Brisbane last weekend but didn't seem to be selling them at the show. I was going to ask the bloke there when they were coming out but it was too busy.

It didn't look anthing special but from what i can remember the ends looked like they were flexible. I ordered one back in march and still havn't had any response on when they're suposed to be out. I've decided since then that I'm going to get a MAF Less tune so I'm going to ditch that idea and get my deposit back.
