Guys,

Has anyone heard about the new V8 engine plant that Holden is building at Laverton in Melbourne. Apparantly it will be used to "build" V8's. Now, I know that the new HFV6 plant has been built at Fishermans bend and I'm not getting this confused. There is a bloody big building being built at the moment that is visable from the freeway, apparantly home to Holdens new V8 engine plant...

Anyone know any more?

Rumour Mill??

I suspect an investment of that size and significance wouldn't require confirmation on here. Our beloved Mr Steve "They're not Speed Cameras, They're Safety Cameras" Bracks would have been crowing about this type of investment from the rooftops. That alone makes me doubt whether this is any more than speculation.

Hope it is though!! Would be brilliant for Holden / HSV to have engines built in OZ!! Will watch this thread with interest to see if any more detailed info pops up!!

The source comes from someone who works for a company that tendered to build the factory on Holden's behalf. I clarified that this was not the V6 plant and he said "no because WXYZ (not the real name!) won that contract"...

Maybe it's a warehouse to store the stockpile of faulty LS1 engines. :D

OR, if I may be serious for a change... Holden might have bought a heap of LS1s from the US, enough engines for the entire life-cycle of the VZ.

Or the wharehouse to store the LS1 supply until VEII, when the new V8's finally arrive much as Ford had to do with their Windsor stockpile.

Although to be fair....I think I'd prefer a stockpile of LS1's

I remember a few years back Holden (Peter Hanenberger) announced LS1 production in Oz I think, then backflipped. I think it is innevitable sooner or later. Including export markets Holden is pumping out lots (Maybe more than 50,000 a year?) of V8 engined cars. Maybe the LS1 backflip was to wait for the new LS2. Although it's strange that we haven't heard anything about this in the media or from Bracks or Howard.

I have to visit some of my suppliers in Laverton & Laverton North tomorrow so do you have any ideas on the address as I'll take my digital camera along to bring back anything worthwhile...just to help you lion fans....although I'd think it might be more a warehouse then engine plant as you couldn't trust a politician to keep something so secret when it involves jobs/investment etc...

without seeing any pictures of what you guys are talking about, my guess is that it is a new storage area while upgrades to the main plant occur. After all, holden are spending a sh1tload on upgrades at the moment. the new models (VE) are said to have almost twice the parts to build, ie model variations, lhd/rhd etc...

As I said it's visable from the freeway (on the left heading out of Melbourne) not far from the Mcolls trucks depot. It's near the big billboard for Sanctuary Lakes.

maybe they seen the light and are reinvesting in the 5.0 to moderise the design as importing LS1's is costing them alot of money.....

Although my gut feeling is it wouldnt be a V8 production plant (unless is was top secret and to be unveiled at the next motor show....) it is more than likely a warehouse.......

I doub't it because it would probably cost a lot more to remake a modern version of the 5.0 also I hope they don't because the LS1/2 would just walk over it. Had my time with the old 304's I wouldn't go back to one after being with the LS1's. :p

Yeah I guess although it could break a conrod at 4500 rpm like it did in my old VP SS I had. I could sort of put up with its oil leaks but not broken internal bits.
:D

The fact is if it was a factory we would have heard about it. While I think local V8 production will happen at some point, I don't think this is it. And guys... Five-O is dead, never to return, no use wasting time speculating. LS2 is the future.

I drove into Harcourt Rd, Altona which is the only very large factory being built at the moment. Holland construction is building it and if not for the absolute bucketing rain/wind I would have jumped into the site office and asked who the developer/owner was. I took 2 shots with my mobile and will try and post later or host somewhere however judging by the shear height of the building (a jumbo could park inside) compared to say the HFV6 plant its most likely a warehouse. Maybe someone can give Holland a call and ask who they're building it for?

That sounds like the one. It does sound more like a warehouse, however, why would the stockpile V8's in Melbourne if the cars are put together in Adelaide?

They can be sent over at the same time and on the same trucks as they ship the new V6's......

very handy for HSV too!!

do you guys think there is an abundance of room at the Elizabeth plant? Wrong! Oh, and there is no benefit to HSV if the engines are stored in Mexico City (sorry, Melbourne), as all of the HSV's have their engines fitted online. Apart from the C4B (which is also fitted online), they are identical to the standard Holden fare. Only induction and some exhaust mods occur at the Clayton facility.
