Hi All,
Just wanted to share a bit of frustration and seek others experiences in this area.
I have just been dumped by a "girly" (think about it) insurance company after doing some mods to my car.
A couple of months back I had the headers and exhaust replaced, I contacted the insurance company, they were fine with this and said I could have a maximum of three mods without affecting my policy.
Tonight I called them to advise about the CAI mods, and was politely told my car was no longer insured due to this modification.
They then put me through to their affiliate (Just Car Ins) to insure me, a grand total of $1200 p.a to insure (rating 1, over 40yrs!) and $850 excess! This on a market value policy of $33100.
I had been paying $800 previously, $450 excess and agreed value of $40K :(
To top things right off, the company cancelling my policy tried to tell my wife (policy in both names, so the suckers had to talk to the premesnstrual bitch, that'll teach em) there was no refund of unpaid premium due.
Upon hearing this, PMB then asked them to check again or she would check with the Insurance Ombudsman, unused premium was then promptly OK'd for Refund. :booty:
Can anyone suggest any good Insurance companies who allow Mods at a reasonable rate.
Thanks, Chris

Sorry but Just Cars is it or Shannons but I just renewed with Just Cars as Shannons price was $2300.
In Melbourne I have seen prev post that RACV will insure your car no probs AAMI can be a bitch

I have moved back to Melbourne for good now and have just paid $1,791 with Shannon's :D for a fully modified vehicle i.e. cam/heads, exhaust, lowered, six piston brakes, mafless tune etc. But I tarvel less than 8,000 km p.a. and have a quick track.
I recommend NRMA... (if appropiate for you)... I'd been with AAMI for 9 years with my old car (rating 1 for life), never had a claim and had been over 5 years since getting a ticket.... tried to insure Sandy thru them and they don't insure V8s for under 30s..... a little annoyed....
NRMA has come to the party with rating 1 for life (as such) and has allowed me to mod the exhaust no wuckas....

If you have an accident do they let you nominate your own repairer or do they put the reapir work out to tender?

Just car Insurance told me last year $1350 Rating 1 with $850 excess and you can't choose your own repairer. I was 29 then.
Shannons told me my car was "too standard" for them to insure.
So I went RACV $1450 but with $450 excess and you can choose your own repairer. And I told them about the headers, exhaust, music system and tinted windows. Didn't mention CAI. (4 mods)
Never claimed, so can't comment any more about them.
With motor vehicle insurance I have three important considerations:
1/ I must be able to chose my own repairer
2/ I want to be coverered for any modification as long as it is legal
3/ I want to be able to go to sleep at night with full knowledge that my car insurance will be honoured in the event of a mishap occuring.
I have been with Shannon's for over 10 years with four different vehicles all modified extensively and have made two claims, all claims have been handled in a courtious and professional manner and repairs all made by my choice of repairer to my complete satisfaction.
These are the reasons why I do not mind paying extra for complete peace of mind.

If you supply 3 quotes, they will choose the cheapest. Just make sure the one you want to use IS the cheapest.
Ive done it and didnt have a problem.
AAMI currently cover the Caprice ($614 for $44k cover) but will be changing to Just cars when the SC is on ($1188 for $54k cover, unlimited mods, $800 excess plus an additional $500 to cover 18' rims if stolen or damaged)

They are the same reasons I chose Shannons. It costs me $2000 per year, but they have no problem with my mods. They said I can go up to 650 hp before even needing to ring them. I have had two claim so far - all handles amazingly with no fuss. Only catch is that no-one under 25 that drives my car is insured. So guess what? No-one under 25 has ever driven my car...

NRMA or Shannons (in Sydney at least). I ended up calling Shannons because NRMA have a fubar rule about not being allowed to go wider on the rims - I wanted 9" on the back. Shannons ended up cheaper! ... and they cover any street legal modification, you just need to let them know about it.
After a not-so-good experience trying to get a clubby insured with them 3 years ago, it's been nothing but a pleasure this time. Maybe I've just been lucky with the people who've answered the phone this time around ;)

Thanks for the feed back guys. Rang Shannons and spoke to a guy there he was very helpful but they could not insure my car because it didn't fit their critiria (i.e i am not a club member or the car is not modified enough) never the less he was a top bloke to talk to and helped me with the wording when i talk to other insurance companys. I rang the RACV spoke to them got insurance with all the mods for $950 and agreed value and life time rating 1 and they will accept more mods :D
Again thanx Chris

One company tells you "too many mods" and another tells you "not enough" mods. Thats basically what I found as well.
RACV $950? Thats cheap. I guess thats because its not an SS. Doesn't that stink?

:)
RACV insure my SV8 for agreed value 42000, the only mods is the "S" pack body kit for $770:00 or at monthly payments of $70:10. over 40 will be $700:00. the main reason why i only got the "S" not the "SS" body kit

... Shannons do have a critria as to the driver qualifing for Insurance; unfortunately Shannons can not assist all enquiries on insurance. Excellent feedback, good to see you got some good advise, nice to know Shannons may not be able to assist with insurance but could give direction as to whom may be able to assist. The RACV premium for the mod's you have seems quite good dude. :)
Cheers,
Dane :p
