Thought you had seen it all? I was driving down Springvale Rd, about to cross the Nunawading train crossing b4 the Maroondah Hwy intersection....
There was a red/light speed camera for the train crossing!!!!
My main concern is there can't be any warning for when it would trigger off. Unlike a main traffic light that warns with an amber light first... Be careful with that one.... I don't believe this was told to the public either. Which one do we shoot first? The camera or Steve Bracks? (ok this is an exact duplicate of the one i did in FF if anyone didn't notice)

If it is a Red Light camera it will be interesting, as most people start to move off as the boom gates rise, while the Red Lights continue to flash until the boom has finished lifting, ie if you watch the lights they are red until the boom has completed it's lift. So legally you should remain stationary until the lights stop, it will catch heaps if that is the case. It may be more directed at people not keeping the tracks clear as the traffic builds very quickly around there and people get caught on the tracks.

^^^^^ What he said.
How do you expect people to obey the law if you don't enforce it?
I'd be p!ssed if I got caught, though....

That camera cracks me up, I always slow to about 10kph when crossing there, so dont think I'll be getting any speeding tickets from that one
Shame they can afford to put a speed camera there, but couldn't afford to fix the pedestrian part of the crossing before someone got killed :(
--for those that dont know, there was a disabled guy who's wheelchair often got caught in the tracks, he complained, but I dont think anything ever got done, even when he got killed

There was a very small write up in Saturdays Herald Sun. I agree they have gone completly mad here in Victoria.

Is'nt that intersection still extremley bumpy over the lines like it has been for as long as I can remember? Bracksy never got that right did he? After all its cheaper to stick a camera there.
Thanks for that info though, will check it out next time I'm there.

Maybe the fines will pay for a bridge at that intersection like it should have had 10 years ago!!!
I agree they won't catch anyone for speeding there but I guarantee they will get people who cross the tracks whilst it is still flashing red!!! I don't think victorians have learnt that part of the highway code yet!!!!!!!!;)

the more i hear about victoria, the more i hate it! does mr bracks actually do anythin good ? who voted him in in the first place ? whats his caper with being such an arse. man i hate guys like him
argh
thats rediculous.
If someone got killed because a driver was negligent, then the driver can (rightfully) kiss his ass good bye
but if someone dies due to the government's negligence, then they simply place more restrictions on the drivers until it becomes the drivers fault for everything, including fubar'ed road conditions.

That's what happens when they put in an ex school teacher into politics. I'm still fuming over the proposed tolling of the scoresby bypass.

That seems to fit in with many of the Government's Road Safety Policies.
There was an article about this in the paper - the majority of crossing accidents occur on country tracks without boom gates or lights. Once again put revenue first rather than spend money fixing these issues.
I understood from a TV program that the camera's at this stage are used ONLY for information purpose. No fines will be issued at this time from the railway camera's.
Not to say in short period this will change, maybe the Bracks Gov is gauging the viablitiy of errecting these camera's first. :(

OK I HAVE FOUND OUT!!!!
I called Neil Mitchell this morning on 3AW while he was interviewing Bracks, and they are "just monitoring the tracks for safety and NO FINES are to be issued from it" - but do we really trust that guy after everything? I probably just gave him the idea to start fining people on it! Get rid of him! I think the Liberals were going to remove that crossing all together and put the train underground there, would have done more than a silly camera

There was a red/light speed camera for the train crossing!!!!When I first read that I thought that Bracksy had turned the cameras on the trains to make sure they weren't going too fast! Since they aren't Govt trains anymore, that would make them fair game.

Bracks may have picked up the idea of the "boom gate/red light" camera from the findings of the NTSB/STA which brought down a series of recommendations after a Passenger Bus was stopped in a line of traffic across a grade (level) crossing and the Ghan Passenger Train could not stop in time.
The accident happened at Salisbury SA approx 2 or so years ago and all grade crossings in metro Adelaide are "hatch painted" to remind everyone.
The Salisbury Crossing has "boom gate/red light" camera.
