REPLACEMENT FOR DISPLACEMENT.

"The number of boofheads that come out with "only milk and juice come in 2 litres" is to this day, surprising. Sure, they are generally driving five-buck VB Commodores and swim in the shallow end of the gene pool, but they do, after all, have a point. Milk and Juice do come in two litres - they just aren't the only things,"

"If it weren't for marketing then there would be no such thing as a local V8-powered car on the showroom floor. Gutless by capacity, inefficient with fuel and bulbously overweight, if it weren't for the exhaust note and the basic instinct of purchasers, there would hardly be a new V8 registered."

Perhaps it was the next paragraph you wrote that had us *Boofheads* wondering :D

Gutless by capacity, inefficient with fuel and bulbously overweight, if it weren't for the exhaust note and the basic instinct of purchasers, there would hardly be a new V8 registered. Ford just found this out by detuning it's 4.0L turbo as much as possible and still have it blow away it's big 'gun' V8. Surely embarrassing - and reflected in the showroom sales of the cars. It's a recurring situation then. While there is nothing wrong with large-capacity, highly powered four cylinder engines,

Martin_D

So Markone...let me write this S L O W L Y so you understand

5.7 litres making 235kw works out to 41.2kw/litre.....Thats gutless by capacity
Getting 18l/100km around town........Thats inefficient
1700kg on the weighbride for my tonner......Thats bulbously overweight
The 4L XR6T is faster than a new XR8......Thats fact

What dont you understand? Or, conversely, does the truth hurt? Surely you didnt think your SV8 had an F1 style pedigree

No argument on the taxi :) the pedigree goes back a long way..it was more
the leanings for sports car's of 2ltr capacity the article reflected too while flogging the virtues of your
tradesman tool as a commercial enterprise that had me wondering

I missed that one Markone.
Let me say now, that I would swap my Tonner for a Lotus Exige in a heartbeat. Only the retards that I refer to in my original post would have a quizzical look on their face and comeback with "Fuggoff moite"

As far as the commercial enterprise? Imagine tuning GenIII engines and actually owning a car to experiment and test with yourself! Some folks dont like being Guinea Pigs. However, each to their own :)

if it weren't for the exhaust note and the basic instinct of purchasers

That's a shame to see someone who is making a living out of perpertuating the v8 world to so publicly denigrade it.

There's a time and a place for all kinds of vehicles, and certainly marketing departments work to place the right products in the right markets, but r&d groups also spend a lot of time building products that suit specific purposes. I imagine it would be pretty handy to have a V8 in a tonner if you actually load it up and hook up a trailer to it. I also know from experience that overtaking on the highway in my V6 4WD takes a lot longer than it did in my V8 4wd, and so much so, that I generally don't overtake anymore and just deal with the car doing 90-95 in front of me until I get to a dual lane carriageway.

I guess the real shame is that some of us will see Martin's credible technical input in a changed light. I thought Martin's passion came from a love of the V8 and it's potential, but now I see it's just marketing. Hey, what's wrong with that right? It's a free market!

Thanks,
Brett

You could argue this one all day.

ST,
I cant imagine a pushrod, single cam non turbo 4 putting out super high kw/litre figures, the latest turbo 4's are hardly fuel effecient for their displacement either, and how much do you expect a vehicle with a one tonne carrying capacity to weigh?? and the EB XR6 was quciker than the XR8 at the time without a turbo, so nothin new here.

How can anyone seriously say at 1640kg (SV8) a large V8 family sedan that can carry 4 large adults in comfort is overweight compared to a small 4cyl sedan at 1470kg (WRX) that would have my four year olds toes putting dents in the back of the front seats.

A 2 litre N/A impreza puts out 46kw/litre with the advantage of multiple valves and more than one camshaft.

Me thinks this whole arguement is a great example of using selective stats to make your point. Im sure ST could make the reverse arguement sound just as convincing in say SC magazine. True Martin?

Cheers Rick

Tuna in a nearby forum recently:

"Thought you might like to know that the rice fairies had a dyno day in Adelaide on Saturday. Lashings of Sunwhite Calrose rocked up to display their miserable 2000cc (and under) piles of whooshing excretia on the dyno.

I took CAPAs stinking old (well only three month old but VERY thrashed as anyone that was at the ls1 drag nationals can tell you) blown XR8 there, and patched down a nice conservative 500rwhp (no cooler, 10psi boost) lots of tyre spin. Thought that might do the trick.

Amongst all of the promises, and all of the rice, not one of the stickered up mofos could get within 150rwhp of this effort. Most struggling around the 200rwhp mark....in heavily (yet poorly) modified trim. As they discovered that day, the only way, is to be a V8 owner.

Power to the poseurs!"

You think as little of each of your potential audiences...at least you are balanced

Bah .... do you all REALLY care that much about one of Tuna's articles in a non-V8 mag?
He can tune V8's well and has good knowledge that we often take advantage of. He can also build up some decent non-V8 turbo jobbies that pull the numbers too. Both sides get a win out of it , so if he writes an article in a primarily non-v8 magazine saying that V8's are for the knuckle draggers, then who really cares .... I know it doesn't bother me.... Do you really think he's going to write an article in an import mag saying that V8's rule and the cars that all of the readers own are crap?

Wow :hide: didn't think it would create this much of a stir.

We all know that Tuna writes for different publications so i dont really see this article as being offensive to the v8 owners.

I thought it was amusing, thats why i posted it. I think the article had some good facts in it.

But who really cares, his next article in a non rice mag will probably take the mickey out of the ricer kids anyway. ;)

Slightly OT:

It's funny how people use kW/L to describe an engine's efficiency. I reckon we should be (also) using kW/kg of engine mass in order to give an indication of the engine's true benefit.

Don't laugh, they have this sort of criteria for engine design in F1. The McLaren F1 designer was seeking an engine source (BMW) for the car's chassis to meet a similar criteria that also included constraints in engine size.

This way, we're comparing an LS1, which, in VZ guise, develops 260kW with it's mass of 193kg which equates to roughly 1.34 kW/kg. Compare this to the new Alloytec...190kw/168kg = 1.13 kW/kg. I'd like to know the comparison for a 2.0L ricer, just out of interest.

Agree, but if it is an LS1 badge at THE LS1 Nationals...

You know how the Ricers have their annual 'Bling' event Drag Combat? Well, I propose we aim for our own, late Feb, early March over at Heathcote (its pretty central), going under the name of 'Drag Wombat'. A sort of bare knuckled LS1 drag nationals if you like. No chrome shit, no poofs
...and...

While we actively dont encourage Ricing of any kind, we are pretty keen of having an Import bracket.

I prefer to think of the visual adornments on the Tonner as graphical enhancements picked to meld into the lines and colour of the original vehicle whilst maintaining dynamic visual impact.

The stuff you put on your cars is 'stickers'.....which is why its so ugly.

There is a bit in there where I tell the viewer how much better a Toyota Chaser is than a Commodore, all while wearing a HSV shirt. And then theres the GTR we find selling for $39K thats had about $200K spent on it. I proceed to mention how its much better value than a crappy family hack. Wearing a Falcon top that day :)

In fact the whole time we spent filming in Japan I only ever wore HSV or FPV shirts. Sort of confuses the viewer a bit....you know....keeps everyone happy :) Nothing wrong with being a fence sitter you know

For all of Martin's annoyances he is just like most of us and loves to go fast :)

My 1.1l 4cyl makes 110rwkw :D and runs a quarter somewhere around the 9-10 sec mark :) It uses around 7L/100kms as well ;) and I love it.

I still love my V8 as well :)

I have several mates who have very high powered 6cyl turbos as well and they are mad cars.

I think Martin was talking about the fools who think they are super quick, never race and always justify their choices with the hp/l argument.

Its all about charisma, charm, and personality Darren. If you want I will teach it you some mate for small dollars. Yes?

Looking back through some 2003 writing I did for Hot4s.......(about the price of fuel going over $1 a litre for the first time)

"The first, and biggest issue, is that large capacity domestic application engines tend to have the technology of a pick axe. One manufacturer in particular still believes that its acceptable to have pushrods and two valves per cylinder in 2003. With such inefficient designs then it takes more fuel per cc of engine displacement to achieve the same power delivery as more modern, variable cam timing, DOHC, small capacity engines."

And another in Hot4s on the joys of owning a Morry 1100.........

"Why then did I describe Morrys as solid? Simple really. You see kicking the bastard Morry in, something which came somewhere in the third to fifth day of ownership required Herculean foot strength. The things were hewn from thick steel, and although the panels were fairly soft, the main structure around the pillars could break bones when ‘Beckhamed’. My mate Johnny who revelled in the punishment these crappers delivered him, devised a way of making swimming pools in the roof without even raising a sweat."

Hope you enjoy it. Vote 1 Tuna!

"Having given up the fags for a few weeks, and resiting the urge to blow the lot down the pub, enough small change could generally be accrued to move up to the next level of shitter. Enter the Commodore Four. A concept lauded by the media as being revolutionary, and ahead of its time, the reality was, and still remains, that the Commodore Four was probably the biggest pile of manure ever built in this country."

Even the trusty old 'Alfa Rodago' got a healthy burst!

"Even the salt spray from a busy fish and chip shop was enough to make Alfas break out into terminal body rot, which led a good mate of mine to develop the theory ‘All Alfas have rust. Just with some you cant see it’. That was a direct reference to the prick used car salesmen and backyard crash repairers that would lavish the massive rot holes in the cars basic structure with kilograms of body filler, before applying cheap paint, and selling as a ‘good un’. All of this from cars that were often just over five years old.

If the rust didn’t get you, then the electrics surely would. Like a kid with a box of matches, the spirit that possessed your Alfa would find ways of spontaneously igniting in all of the weirdest spots, and generally at the worst times. I clearly remember indicating to turn right in peak hour traffic, and having a decent size fire spark up in the steering wheel shroud. Always carry a fire extinguisher…provided it doesn’t fall through the holes in the floor."

Now, tell me, which part of all this ISNT true?

I believe one of the objectives of office is to generate public debate... On that basis: Tuna for Prime Minister!!!

Can you image Martin and Peter Garret going at it? WOOHOO!!!!

:)
What, do you mean both of them taking populist stances and telling very amateur porkies at once?

Actually for those that want to help my plunge into politics then please buy my latest Ricer video to hit the stands, Hard Tuned Imports 3. ..snipped rubbish...

OMG! Are you one of the nuff nuffs on the Hard Tuned Imports Video (first one?)???.
I bought that pile of steaming crap and was so disappointed with the crappy footage and idiotic commentary!

As for the article, I'm a fan of V8's, turbos and rotaries. I do think that if you are able to communicate with large amounts of people on both sides (ie 8's and 4's etc..) that you SHOULD try to bring the groups CLOSER. Food for thought perhaps?
cheers,
Adam

Now, now Tuna, don't get your knickers in a knot. I'm sorry for letting you know how poorly constructed your video is/was. I hope that this criticism allows you to create a watchable video that is worth the medium it's recorded on.

cheers,
Adam

This thread reminds me of the Beauty and the Beast show that was on TV with Stan Stamanic(???).

I'd love to see what this would be like after a few beers at the pub.

Handbags at Dawn I'd say.

I doubt that peaceful coexistence would ever be a possibility. You got one camp that cites juice and milk coming in 2 litres, and then you got the other camp which insists that only cheap wine comes in 5 litres. This slagging off at eachother will never end as people who drive fours and turbos are different to those that drive eights. Sure all members of these camps are car enthusiasts, but both camps thrive on different concepts.

It's actually plagiarism.

"Its" is the possessive form of the pronoun it and is correctly written without an apostrophe. It should not be confused with the contraction "it's" (for it is), which should always have an apostrophe.
