View Full Version : REVIEW: HSV Sprint Day Sandown RW- Sunday 8th August 2004
What a day .... :)
Thanks and well done to the HSV Car Club for putting on one of the best arranged days todate. Flagies and organizers, take a bow. :D
Was grouped with the 'brothers' (Grassy / Pooga / Steve), Sandown was not looking good in the morning, overcast and the track looked damp. Out for the warm up laps (4x), there was water across the track between turns one and two, and a large wet patch on the VB corner.
Myself .... The rear end was a twitchin' left then a right, this in the warm up. Not that confident going into the first timed session, but been in group 4, by the time our group got out, a semi-dry line in the wet areas had come about and dampness on the track had all but gone. The rain todate had stayed away, in fact a patches of blue sky were about.
First session .... I followed Grassy out and Steve's up my rear ( - no pun intended). Well after half way into the first lap, I'm shown the blue flag, in essence move over and let the Yellow Monaro through. This by chance was the best chance to follow a faster Steve in front, the logic, if he can hold and brake at that point, so can I. :) Suddenly the 'mindful' approach was put to the side and after our group completed the first 4 timed laps, Steve hit the fastest lap at a 1.27.00, me on a 1.27.07 and the Grassman just on .3-.4 sec on that time. The Pooga mobile was stationary due to a cautious approach ... will let Pooga explain.
Second Session .... Where as in the first session,we were tucked together on the track, this time I lost touch of the 'boys' in the warm up. The drizzle started to come down, but was having no immediate impact on the track. I got onto my forth lap and just found myself working CALEYS in a far more aggesive manner than before, I may feel faster but this doesnt meanthe lap times would be fast, as shown on other tracks. Well the smile couldn't be bigger ... a 1.26.30. A PB by over 4 seconds from my last visit. Couldnt be happier. :D Steve finished the day with a brillent 1.26.6 and Grassy with a PB by more than 2.5seconds in a low 1.27
The rain came in shortly after this session, I may be a winp but that the ticket for me to pack up. :( Stayed and watch some 5 lap sprint events, the rain eased off but the track was damp. A few cars 'gettin' sideways, but over all, I believe there was only one car that came off in a semi big way.
Large ....... I'll get even dude, after taking pictures of CALEY with rain on it. Spanky ..... Good to see ya out and rumblin'.
Thanks again the HSV boys and gals.
Cheers,
Dane

Well it was another extremely well organised day at Sandown. The extra two in each group went down pretty well and ensued lesser times between getting back out on the track, that’s if you are lucky enough to be out there. I have been having a few troubles with my car. I was silly enough to change camshafts when Steve at F1 had just sorted out my last one. My only tip would be to make sure you get the full details of the cam prior to giving the nod, ask lots of questions, dont just make assumptions. Basically the story goes that my car went into F1 last Monday for a Cam change. The still fairly new 216/220 Comp Jobbie was making way for a bigger one. An ex Higgins 228/228 sounded like it would fit the bill. Lucky for me I did this as the boys at F1 found a broken valve spring, so much for Comp 918s being unbreakable. Much to my dismay, once installed my Car was making over 10rwkw less than the old cam. Not a happy camper at all. This is where it is a true test for a workshop and all I can say is the Boys at F1 went above and beyond the call of duty. They took this lack of power personally, something I have only seen at this workshop, not that I have been to many others. Steve and George worked tirelessly on my engine, changing all sorts of stuff to find the problem, even working into the wee hours of the morning. They worked on my car everyday for that week trying different cats, exhausts, manifolds etc... Still not making the numbers but they still didnt give up. Another top guy called James Young, the maker of Grassys super reliable stroker even helped out on a few occassions with his excellent input. I had to pick the car up late on Saturday night and change my tyres for the Sunday Track day and unfortunately the car still wasnt making the numbers but they worked tirelessly to get it as good as possible. So this thread was about the track day yeah??? Ok, so get to the track, car felt not too bad considering the power. Get out on the track for the passenger event (meant to be not at race pace but yeah......) The car felt strong, F1 had played with my stock diff and had done a terrific job on it, it was like a locker! Down the straight I was pulling 210 easily, I was hardly using the brake so I was confident that I could have pulled 220++ easily with proper braking but of course this would be saved for the timed events. Coming around onto the straight crossed it up a couple of times, still getting used to the diff but a big improvement. Came into the pits after this session and thought man my old numbers here are going to tumble. Jump into the car for the next session and oil light comes on and beeps at me. Hmmmm turned the car off, open the bonnet, check the oil, all nice and fresh and super full. Start the car and again the light comes on and beeps. Give it a few good revs and it went away. So all I could put it down to was a pressure issue. Basically the car then sat there watching the others go around. At the end of the day, back to F1, another new cam and rebuild the oil pump. This may have been extra cautious but after watching someone elses car have oil problems and doing a motor in, I wasnt keen on doing that to mine, not worth the risk. What I did learn from the day was that Steve at F1 not only does great work, but has nuts the size of Texas. To pull times like that with a super baby cam and bolt ons is amazing. It was good to see Steve knock off some of the other usual quick listers with their super powerful cheque book engines. Danes times was awesome too, great to see him knock off the usual suspects aswell. Grassy did extremely well too with street type suspension, his times will surely drop when some decent suspension work get done. Bring on Phillip Island!!!!!!

I woke up on Sunday Morning to the sound of V8's hammering around Sandown (I live in Noble Park)...and they were quite loud and awesome sounds too!
I did do a drive by for a stickey, but it was all fairly quiet so I kept on cruising.
Well done to all on some pretty good times....i'm sure that saying "hope you had fun" is an understatement.
Hope the car gets sorted out too Pooga!
Jeff.

Wow, I didn't realise that half the cars I saw at Sandown yesterday were forum members, small world!!!
The next one's at Phillip Island on 19/09/04, keep it free.
Cheers

i think we were very lucky weather wise and i had a great day with the vl even though i was using the day to run in the new engine and to sort out any teething probs with it , she now suffers oil surge (the breathers are in the wrong location) because of the stroker so ill have to fix that before the time i race it , the difference in acceleration compared to the 5.0 is amazing .
those of you who havnt been to a club track day should come down for a look , there was everything from a S2000 road car to VS ex V8 supercars ! the ex V8's were running 1:19's , very quick cars . felt sorry for ya pooga but i think sensible for you to leave it for another day and a big thanks to grassy for not leaving me standing at the drivers briefing with my pants around my ankles (unlike winton) , dane ya shoulda braved it for the wet sessions , good fun , i even managed a spin at dandy corner  , was also good to catch up with a few of the guys

Thanks to all that were involved in making it a really successfull day. I think we need to get a rule of thumb here that we don't post other peoples times though :p

I hope to be a tenth as good as you dude, then my times will come down.
I need to take some tablets or something to make my balls bigger for Phillip Island. Sandown I can handle, no probs but Phillip Island is a man's track!
Are you in Erik? Largie?

.... You know the facts, put your butt or Grassy in CALEYS seat and the times would be down under 1.20's. :p It's my schitty driving skills holding the times back. :) Stop using my 1/10 saying ..... I got nothin to use if you jump onto it. (Bugger :limpy: )
From what Grassy was telling me, your balls are bigger than texas.
Cheers, :D
