Hoping someone could help me out here. I have never purchased a car interstate, and was wondering if there is anything i need to be aware of, careful of, etc?

Also whats happens to the rego in the old state, is the remaining rego refunded when you swap it to NSW??

Do you pay stamp duty in the state you register it in, or purchase it from??

Anything else i should think about??

Thanks!!!

A friend of my Dad (who was living in Adelaide) came up to Queensland and while here bought a new BMW. I dont know the reasoning behind it but all the paperwork had to be filled in with a QLD address.... So for a brief moment in time a nice new BMW resided at my house

I’ve gone to the auctions in qld (from NSW), and bought unregistered cars, Got a permit from qld transport and driven them home. Then got them registered in NSW. Its a little bit of stuffing around but not hard.

You have to get CTP insurance before you can get a permit. I think i got one from racq. You can get 1 day cover or 2 day cover etc.

Expect to be looked at by the cops, and posibly get pulled over a bit (driving with no number plates) Last time we got pulled over once by a RBT. but they were so worried about the no plates/checking the permit etc, that they forgot to RBT or check the licence, which was lucky as the ex was driving and she had forgoten her licence.

Bought a S/H Govt car at the SA Gov Auctions for my son who is interstate and receipts, etc were in his name.

Obtained a PERMIT (which includes CTP) in my name to take car from Auction place to home to service and back home. (intra state maximum 3 days and $40) (no plates).

Obtained a PERMIT for 10 days to go from Adelaide to Darwin ($40) (no plates).

As I was driving my son's car from Adelaide to darwin, comprehensive cover was secured in my name from time of Auction to time of registration in his name in Darwin, and
no Stamp Duty was paid until the car was registered in Darwin.

I got the SA Registration Office to mark the permit "no plates" in case I was challenged by the police.

I bought my Senator from Sydney (I live in Adelaide). I flew up and back to test drive the car and inspect it. Once I decided to buy it I got an independant HSV dealer to give it the once over, cost me about $125 for a full inspection and report, covering all components of the car and a compression test. The owner of the car drove it to and from the dealer for me (obviously).

Purchased the car, got the transfer slip for the rego and CTP ins. Got a receipt for the car. Got back to Adelaide, had a vehicle inspection done by Motor Reg here to verify the cars details, then registered it in my name here. Sent through the info to NSW motor reg and they refund the registration paid on the car to me (one of the little perks) but got no refund on the CTP insurance.

Not really that hard, just time consuming. Get all the mechanical checks done after test driving the car and make sure you speak to both Motor reg dept's in both states to make sure you get the paperwork done right the first time.

Hope this helps

Here is a staunch warning. DUe to consumer law in S.A, dealers do not have a duty to inform you of the cars history.

I GOT CAUGHT GOOD!!!!

Transport SA DO NOT USE the national Written off vehicles database, therefore when I checked the history of my vehicle it all came up roses.

Upon getting to Victoria... Uh Oh....

Car has been a statuatory write off.... TWICE.

Developed all sorts of weird Sh*t from poor repairing underneath, and under SA consumer affiars i was ... well rooted.

Under Vic law I could jam the car back up the dealers clacker, and probably sue. The onis in SA was up to the dealer if they wanted to help, but according to them they weren't informed either.

I traded the car Monday on a CV8...expensive way out but cheap way out of a mess.

but got no refund on the CTP insurance.

Too late now, but you should have got a refund on the CTP..
When the torana was smashed the rego was cancelled along with the CTP and a refund cheque for the CTP was also sent back.. Just have to deal with the CTP supplier rather than RTA.

I bought a car from QLD a few years ago and remember having to do the following in this order:

1. Get a Blue Slip in NSW for the car (Pit report)
2. Get a Pink Slip in NSW
3. Cancel the rego in QLD and get a refund for the remaining rego (handed the plates in to the RTA)
Re-register the car in NSW and pay stamp duty.

As for stamp duty where you buy the car I'm not sure - I didn't pay this because I bought the car from a friend and we never transferred the rego in QLD - only cancelled it.

The RTA actually weren't too bad and new exactly what had to happen so they would probably be worth talking to

Good luck with the purchase
