View Full Version : Chevrolet Badging on Commodores

Hi guys.

I've seen a few Commodores around town here in Melbourne with Chevrolet badges.. particularly on VY utes. My question is where do you get them from and why would anyone want to take the Holden badging off?

It's not just the badges on the panels but also the front grilles. I even saw a crewman with Chevy badges and the commodore badge on at the same time. It looked

Not having a go at anyone, just curious.

I think it looks too try-hard. Leave Holden badges on Holdens and Chevy badges on Chevys

sold o/seas with this badging as chev same cars. just to be a bit different over here. not everyone want a car that looks exactly like everyone elses.

Changing the badge doesnt change the looks, it just shows "I think i can fool myself, and hopefully everyone else that this car which looks like a Holden, that it may be a Chevy"

So cause its a Chev Engine we should leave the badges on the engine covers?

I think Chev Badges have always looked tough in the past on older vehicles, but on new cars not too sure, sometimes it can be a bit try hard.

hmm i agree with all points raised.

im about to get rid of my gen 3 badges and put the GTO 5.7 badges.

just the 5.7 badge (not gto) under my indicators on each side...what u guys think?
but im keeping all other holden badges on. i just want sumthing different as im sick of the gen 3 badge and dont like the VY V8 badge...

The only real Chevy part of the car is the LS1 engine, so any Chev symbols should really be relegated to this only. The rest of the badging is just for a bit of personalising...

Each to their own, but for me, I will stick to the Chev badging on the engine

MUST AGREE...

I always thought it a bit   not as bad as putting HSV badges on stock commodores or (even mock ups for that matter)...

However as they say different horses for different courses....

Might get meself a V-dub and whack some Porsche badges on it. After all they were both designed by the same guy's family.

I think the Holden badge looks a bit plain on a SS, ok for the normal models. The little blue Chevy badges add a bit of character to the car.
The engine is a Chevy. Its not XR8 drivers putting GT stripes on there cars. That’s try hard, something its not.
Cheers
Tony

I know it's being pedantic but the LS1 is NOT a Chevrolet engine but more correctly a GM engine. It's something that a lot of magazines even get wrong. It's official name is GM GenIII 5.7L LS1.

SSbaby, you are right. All GM engines have always been just GM engines and have always had that printed on the cylinder block (as far as i am aware)

If you dont like a badge then remove it is my philosophy.

Nissan badges on VL's is a good point, never quite thought of it like that!!!

Though I did briefly entertain Chev badges on my old 240Z at one stage...it pays your ego to advertise occasionally :))))

holden export the holden and a chevy, so they make a chevy in theory. who knows why, the ppl overseas all know it really a holden. they even do the same thing they want holden badges instead. Its sold as both so it is both, now its also a pontiac, it a 3 in car.
we can put holden chev and pontiac badges on together just to confuse you all more now.

IIV8II

They are also sold as Opels....

The VT range was designed from the ground up to be a Chev in export markets so it has, you could say, Chev in its genes. I kinda like Chev badges on late-model Holdens for that personal touch. Saw one this mornng on nice-looking purple VY SS ute. Looked great (except for what appeared to be bald-tyred steelies on the back)

The VL was never intended to be exported as a Nissan - it was simply powered by a bought-in Nissan engine

How about Toyota badges on VNs!

As has been said already each to there own.........

On my SV8 I have an SSX front end, SS sides and rear bumper, Chev grill, Chev Sill plates, SS steering wheel with Chev airbag and Chev bowtie on the boot. All other badges have been removed.
All the above were done (about a year ago) to make it a little different but it seem now that there are more and more cars/utes being badged with Chev so my car is looking a little less different everyday.

Just personal taste really. After all please correct me if I am wrong, but don't GM Holden make the Chevrolet Lumina's for the middle eastern countries, which is still our Commodore just "badge engineered"? I don't mind the Chevy "bow tie" badges for the bonnet and boot, however it does look a bit silly tho when you open up the drivers door and smack bang in the middle of the steering wheel is the Holden logo. If you go to the option of changing the bonnet and boot badges, me myself would think it's a good idea to change the steering wheel airbag cover too. What also looks good is the boot garnish for the VT/VX that has "Chevrolet" made into it.

Although it does seem pathetic that you can not purchase any of these items over the counter here in Australia with correct part numbers even though they are made right here in our own country. In the U.S.A. and Middle East they can give any Australian part number and buy what they want, but we can't do it in reverse  Nice to know whom Holden are really looking after

IIV8II
11-08-2004, 02:12 PM
Pathetic? Do you really think Holden is going to go to the hassle expense of setting up an 'overseas parts' distribution channel in Australia just for you to buy Chev or Pontiac badged parts? What business are you in? Ahh, you're the guy who tried to bring in the GTO engine covers... Get over it, dude

I beg your pardon! My point is that if I lived in the U.S.A. or the Middle East I could quote any Australian Holden part number over the local GM dealers counter, they would order it and I would get it, HOWEVER if you do this in Australia you get told "export only". If it's good enough for them to do it, why is it not the same for us? What's good for the goose, should be good for the gander should it not?

Come on guys,

Turn this round your selves, no need to get opinionated with each other.
You can't have a pi**ing contest over badges, surely.

Badge engineering has been going on for years and years.
The first Porsches were VW's converted by Kharman how long ago?
The Holden V8 Supercar uses a Chev Racing 5.0 V8 and a Ford designed rear axle.
The Holden Commodore was born from the Opel Commodore.
The Chev Lumina/Lumina Coupe is a Holden Commodore/Monaro is a Pontiac GTO.
Where do we start? Where do we finish?
Is a Chrysler a Mercedes now?
Is a Mini a BMW........or is it a Chrysler-BMW? (Chrysler, Brazil engine).

Who gives a stuff?
Put R-R badges on it if it makes you feel good.

A car is an expression of the person that owns it, just like clothes and other personal possessions. And some people like to express themselves openly.
In Germany people get the option of de-badging cars in the showroom (i.e. you buy your car de-badged).

Some people have different tastes. That's why there's Chinese, Greek, Italian, Mexican (etc,) restaurants around.

Why can't people just make an observation and leave it at that, without saying that they think it's naff or crap or whatever. This is un-called for and NOT good courtesy.
One man's meat is another's poison.

Do your own thing and don't ram your opinions down other peoples' throats.

If you were told they were built in Australia by Holden everyone would expect a stuffed koala and a kangaroo skin purse with each car purchased    .

Re: the parts thing I think it all comes down to economy of scale, eventually Holden will start selling these Chevy parts over the counter, when they realise how much profit is in it....

Matter of fact, Booran Holden Dandenong have a limited range of chevy parts available now in their spare parts area, including badges and touneau's with the bowtie emblems....

You used to be able to buy the chev badging with the correct part numbers. However this was stopped because some pellican decided it was a good idea to order a couple of thousand badges and wiped out the spare parts stock and Holden had no stock for the o/s spares market. They put a stop on distribution of export parts to the domestic market after that.

I guess it’s like the old school kingswoods and 1 tonners that run 350s (or other Chev engines) you sometimes see them running a Chev badge as if to say its "Chev powered".
Same with the GenIII power cars I guess, that’s the way I see it anyway.

You guys are great! So passionate about motoring. But! They are chevs. We get it all from the yanks, cause they are, potentially our biggest market. Louise Chevrolet was a racing car driver who worked for William Durant (I think?) who founded GM. Buick or one of the other BOP was the "founding" company of GM .. Chevrolet was just the name "taken" and used on GM's entry-level car.
Don't get too fussed about Chev badges on Commodores. The old 5.0L Holden would be struggling along against the competion these days without Chev-power ...
