Hi there,

Just had a Series II VX SS M6 checked out by RACV as a possible purchase. They said that there was a slight whine audible from the gearbox under acceleration. It's done 50000k's.

The guy inspecting it didn't think it was too major and stated that he had heard the same thing from most of the ones he has tested and that it was only slight whine. Apart from that the car was in an overall good condition. I didn't notice the whine when in the car, but then again I didn't exactly know what to listen for...

Is this something to be concerned about? Is this common for these gearboxes? Or would this mean the car has been hammered?

Thanks
JBH

my gearbox whine's and is audible from about 20 metres away. it's a bitch to get in reverse when it's cold, but i think all the m6's are like that.

as for the hammered question, mine has been. :-)

m6 with a whine......??
yep..they all do that
I have driven plenty...new and 100.000ks
they all do it
and don't seem the worse for it

gear selection is the issue with the M6 box....
make sure you can get 1st or reverse..when cold and hot....

There is something Holden can do about it as they fixed the whine on my VXII SS 6 speed without replacing the gearbox. What exactly they did, well the guy at the front desk couldnt tell me!

Whine is "normal" .... as is grinding ball bearing noises apparently (as my lovely Holden service centre people keep telling me)

Thanks for the replies. I am happy, I think, to hear that the whine is normal thing for the M6...

thanks again

You should hear how noisy the gear boxes are when the console and the rubber gearshift boot is removed

The shifter boot's often split, making the noise worse inside the cabin.
