Hey all, my dad is willing to give me is turbo 400 gearbox which is been rebuilt and strengthened with a 2500 stally, which is wat i was going to do to my turbo700.. so what belhousing would be in my car, VP senator .. chev pattern or aussie pattern ?

thnx

As your HSV VP has a Holden 5L V8 the bellhousing pattern would be the aussie pattern.

But all is not lost. I put a T56 [chev pattern] box from the GenIII behind my Holden 5L [aussie pattern] engine and an adaptor ring and clutch assembly was readily available.

Also, the same A4 box [with a different casing] sits behind both the Holden 5L and the GenIII.

I am sure that no matter what the box and engine are, somewhere, someone can mate up the components. BUT it all comes back to "Is the cost of the conversion package worth it?"

Only you can answer that question.

Castlemaine Rod Shop can help, I think

But you will have three speeds instead of four....

Hi John (funny name, it will never catch on)

As stated above, it is all possible.

Of course, it depends on your existing (rear end) gearing and what sort of driving you do, but if you do a bit of cruising, think very carefully before quitting the T700. It runs a slightly shorter first gear anyway, to get you going off the line, and the .7 to one overdrive top. In fact, I swapped a T700 for a T400 in a chev engined car I built years ago, and the T700 was the best thing I ever did.

No doubt, the 700 had some strength issues when first out, but I thought the soft points were well sorted long ago from the factory.

Regards,

John.

.

Never seen an Aussie pattern block in anything after VL. Manual or auto.......

It is turbo pattern. The only issue you will have is speed sensor but this is easy to get around.

Bolt away. :)

PS I have a complete T56 box incl bellhousing to go to turbo from a VS if anyone wants it. ;)

OK then, I take your point. The choices are "turbo" pattern and chevy [GenIII] pattern. :D :D

yep.... Turbo all the way through to VT1. Gen III pattern is turbo minus 1 bolt....never on any Holden block

I would have described the GenIII pattern as "turbo" PLUS three bolts. The top centre one plus a couple below the centre line. this picture is a GenIII T56 mated to a "turbo pattern" Holden V8 donk.

sorry forgot about the top one.....but doesn't the genIII miss one bolt up the top where the turbo has one e.g relocated. The bolts in the sump aren't relative to the discussion really are they? And for the purpose of what is asked the turbo pattern bolts to a Gen III. I know as I've done it. ;)

Yes, the turbo pattern box will bolt to a GenIII engine and a GenIII pattern box will bolt to a turbo pattern engine. Most of the bolts and the spigots line up. It is just a matter of the odd bolt not being provided for, either on the tranny or on the engine.

That centre top bolt on the GenIII box in the picture in my previous post does not pick up anything on the engine block but does bolt to the adapter ring. And yes we can forget the sump bolts in this discussion.

And now you remind me, the GenIII box does not have provision for one bolt. It is the one near the top and to the right of centre. It is the top RH one used by the engine stand in the picture below and in the picture appears to be just below the dizzy. But there is a threaded hole on the front face of the GenIII bellhousing in this location. The adaptor ring uses a countersunk head bolt into this hole. You could say that this bolt has been relocated to the top centre on the GenIII.
