dont they tighten the seatbelt, sort of pulling you back into the seat in the event of an accident?

To keep it simple they remove the slack in the seat belt after the belt retractor has locked so in a bingle it stops you from getting too close to the airbag as your body lunges forward.

Pyro technic pretensioners have a small charge that goes off in an impact, and spins out all slack in the belts holding you firmer in place into the seat. Bloody brilliant idea. Aussie first too I am told. Combined with anit- submarineing seats it basically means you go nowhere.

The same charged cylinder can pose serious threat to an unwary rescue operator if he cuts through one that hasnt gone off in a prang.

In the Commodores, the pre-tensioner actually pulls the buckle. If you look under your front seats you will see the wire. Also be careful storing things there, you don't want to rip those wires out !!
My son borrowed my car when i got it back the warning light was on the dash. so i confronted him about it not too happy he reckons he has done nothing wrong it is just a coincidence. YEAH SURE!! can anyone tell me what i have to do and is it costly.? I think maybe no more loaning of my car. But the seat belt pre tensioner would not go off for nothing correct?.

This happened to me when i got a rip fixed on the side of the front drivers seat, they must of taken the seat out to sew the new fabric on and they mustn't of put it back on right, so the warning light stayed on when i started the car, :soap:
So i went to the holden dealer and they checked the seat belt pretentioners because this was the fault code was telling them, so maybe something got knocked around and done some damage to the wiring etc. i would get it checked out ASAP, i would hate to be in a prang and your restraint systems dont work properly

If it's the airbag warning light, chances are some wiring has simply come loose. It's a common error. Holden will need to reset the light though and it would be worth checking for any potential problems.
The best way to describe pretensioners (in Commodores) is that they are a ~150mm long cylinder, about 15mm diameter, running along just above the seat rail on the inside of the two front seats (facing the transmission tunnel.) The seatbelt buckles are connected directly to them, and in the event of airbags firing, they are triggered and rapidly fire towards the rear of the car, pulling the buckle and seatbelt back to hold you in place. They then stay tensioned as such.
I think you'll find too that they're in the most out-of-the-way location possible should a rescuer need to cut the car.

They just rip the seat belt tight once the airbag alarm goes off. The buggers hurt too. Airbag scares the life out of you when it goes off unexpectedly and the belt rips down bloody tight.
Trust me on this one. Fine if you have a crash but if you hit a gutter hard enough under the car they will go off too. (bloody truck but I have already done a thread bout this crash) You can see how small the impact was as the wheel lock nut is still on the seat

Bad bad burn to my forearm and leg. Permanent scar too now and no feeling in that part of my hand. My leg healed fine
