Can anyone help me out with a noise I am hearing when i push down on my accelerator. The noise only appears on initial take off and only once after the car has been started.

It is very distinctive and almost sounds like a latch closing or a similiar noise to the barrels turning when you use central locking.

It is coming from the left hand side of the engine...

Any others have the same noise in there car??

Is it a problem or a normal function of the car...

Yes I get the same noise....it only lasts a couple of seconds.
I only get it when I first start my car or when I put it in gear and use the clutch for the first time when its cold. I thought it was just normal....anyway its due for a service in 2.5k so they can check it out then. I'm sure its nothing to worry about.

I think that is the traction control. There are 3 ls1's at my house and they all do it M6 and A4. Never worries me only does it once every cold start ;)

Could be, I've got an A4 ute, no traction control, and no noise. The only thing I get is the funny little vibration from the ABS resetting itself when I take off for the first time.

Both my LS1's do it. I believe it is the throttle relaxer initialising after start up. I do know that the ABS also goes through a self check / initialisation process.

Its the ABS system resetting itself. Ignore it. It means your car is working normally.

Yep, definately the ABS. Sounds like a low whirring/buzzing then a slight clunk. Mine caught me out the first time too.

It's not too different from other cars, other than being far more audible. Must be because it's somewhat heavy duty (!!) compared to the 4pots I've driven in the past.

Apparently the VZ gets a revised ABS system (8 pulses/second compared to 4).. I wonder if it's a different system or just a revision to the logic in the old....

Thanks for bringing this up, as I've only had my SV8 for a couple of weeks and was puzzled with that noise, it's going in for a 1500k service this week and I was going to report it then . I can relax now.

It Is Definately The Abs Self Check

The noise you hear when you first press the accelerator after a start is the traction control throttle relaxor. Its the black thing mounted high on the firewall - passenger side that the various throttle cables go to.

There is also a separate ABS test once you move off - it is far less obvious.

I get it too and my vote is for traction control. Why do I think that? Its been raining here a bit this week so the roads were slippery. I almost always drive with the traction on (I'm too lazy to turn it off). I had a 'moment' and as the throttle came back against my foot, lo and behold, the same 'start up' noise occurred. Its the only time I've ever heard it apart from start up every day...
