In Victorian terms [fuel prices] that is around 20l/100. Bit on the high side but not all that unusual if you do mostly bumper to bumper stop start urban driving [and give it some stick]. Mix in some open road driving though and you should get a lot better than that.

Have a friend with a VX Auto Clubby in a small country town and he gets 23l/100 round town [no traffic whatsoever????] but got 11.3 for a trip Melbourne to Gold Coast and back.

My own round town results vary wildly depending on the traffic conditions but on a recent 440km trip with about 20% urban driving I averaged 9.9l/100 which works out at over 750 km per tank. On longer country trips where I have filled up enroute I have seen over 800km before empty showing on the trip computer.

There are many threads dedicated to this subject, if you use the search function you will find heaps of information on it because it raises it's ugly head on a regular basis. Living in Brisvegas the same as you I can go anywhere from 450 - 600klm for a tank depending on how hard or not hard I drive it, and that is a mixture of freeway/peak hour traffic, I haven't done a straight open road tour where I have used over a tankfull yet but would hope I could get around 650klm on open highway.

i have a vx1 ss 5.7ltr around town i get around 13l/100k on the highways gets down to about 9.8lt/100k. if i full it up from nearly dead empty costs me about 55 bucks and get obver 500k/s of driving use out of it (thus depending how i drive the car) or how many dickheads on the road i decide to go past ... (whichever comes first)

The price is irrelevent as petrol prices go up and down by as much as 10c each week.

You should be looking at how many litres per 100 km or how many km per litre.

In the 7500km that my VYII SS 6M has done so far, I have averaged 14.9 litres/100km. In the 62000km that I had the VXII SS for, I averaged 14.7 litres/100km.

It cost me $73 a few weeks ago to whack in about 67 litres and I did about 460km in my normal work week. But that was a one off and the price was something like $1.13 before the 4c discount.

I am going on a trip next week of over 2000km (Melb, Mildura, Adelaide, Stawell, Ballarat, Melb) and I am expecting at least 10 litres/100km with 2 people and a boot full of crap.

In Sydney stop and go I average 17.5 litres per hunded and on the car computer is gives me 410 per fill.
On the freeway I get about 13 litres per hundred.

Recently recorded fuel usage to the drop on a trip from Forbes to Wollongong and got 430kms on 36 litres. Thats with the Trouble and Strife, two Billy Lids and a car with out a square centimetre of safe storage space left over.

Pretty damn good, thats 11.95 kays out of each litre at $111.9.

VY one toner unedited.
430km from a 68.5lt tank, 340km highway rest city.
300km around town max. (Driving miss daisy)
You guys that are getting 500 plus Ks are laughing.
I have heard the one toners run very rich due to the load rating and the possibility they may get worked very hard.
Holden has done this deliberately to protect the engine.
Any one heard this as well.

One tonner also has much shorter gearing than sedans so that will hurt your economy.
on a run our VYII Clubby gets around 10l/100km, around town between 15-20l/100km.
If you are worried about fuel economy go buy a buzz box!!!!!

I think you miss understood my comments “Bully.” I am not bitchn about the fuel economy the toner is getting. Personally I think the toner does OK on the fuel front. As you pointed out it does have different gearing to the sedans, 3.46 Final drive ratio. Its also heaver than an SS. Mine has a steel tray and is 1900kg with half a tank of fuel.
My comments were directed as a general question to others who may have had some experience in the tuning area. I would appreciate comments from them in regard to what the toners fuel mixtures etc are from the factory.
As for buying a BUZZ BOX sounds like you have a complex.

I know it's not a V8 but my RA Rodeo V6 never gets better than 19L/100klm when towing work trailor, and averages 15L/100klm not towing, i should have bought an Cross 8, would have been more economical.

I put mine on the weighbridge in daily driver form a few weeks ago and it went 1,740kg with me in it. Pre-edit mine was running very rich. With the modifications I’ve done, which include fitting 3.46 diff gears the same as in your tonner, I’m running 40rwkw better than when it was standard, but I am achieving the same fuel economy as when I first brought it, which is around 11.4 - 11.8/100klm normal driving, with a mixture of highway and peak hour, with the occasional WOT play. The best I've seen it was 9.8/100klm with an instant check on the highway, the worst is about 12.8 instant check in the city, but I was taking it easy. There are not many engines out there that you can actually modify and increase horsepower but not increase fuel usage. I am pretty happy with the results. I don’t envy our southern cousins with some of the figures achieved down there that is for sure, but would never contemplate a buzz box like bully suggests. I didn’t buy an SS for its economy, but in saying that I am very happy with what I get.

Did about 1400ks last week in the country in my stock WH Statesman V8. Very mixed driving, some freeway, some tight mountain roads (eg Tumbarumba to Kiandra), some faster (eg Snowy Mountains Highway to Cooma ..."Police targeting motorcycle speeding" signs everywhere, good thing I wasn't riding my Ducati...) lots of nice open running, but I'm really getting paranoid these days. You look at the speedo and have to rein it in all the time, I just ended up putting on the cruise control, which I don't really like, and am glad I did on the Monaro Hwy, for a start, couple of patrols out there. The open road looks like its radar/booby trappped, so easy to do the speed in my thing, but if you get caught, it can be serious money and loss of licence for virtually just cruising the open road. End of whinge.

Averaged 10.8 litres per hundred for the trip. Got 550 k's on one tank from near full with "60k's to empty". I am very happy.

Do a search buddy :)

Stock as a rock I was only getting 210km out of a tank hooning daily in peak hour traffic with no highway. After my bolt ons, it went up to 270km out of a tank. I now add a bottle of octane booster to each full tank and get 300-330km out of a tank now. I usually fill up with between 120-80km left on the km remaining display.

If you have to ask how much a V8 drinks, you don't really want one.

M6, pre-edit, standard unleaded. Usually no worse than low 15's around town, and sometimes down to 13l/100km. This is mainly a mix of suburban running, perhaps with some freeway here and there.. no heavy traffic jam stuff. Occasional redline blasts (though as we all know you're over the burbs' limit in no time.. in FIRST too..) don't seem to hurt too much. Most trips no more than 25 minutes.

Easily get 10 and under on long steady trips.. best was a pump verified 7.69l/100km on a smoothly driven run Sydney to Canberra (fueled up just before on-ramp, refuelled and calculated on that first Ampol after the carriageway ends in north Canberra - 1 passenger and our luggage).

I like seeing the surprise with people that drive small buzz boxes when I tell them open road consumption that the LS1 is capable of.. whilst we might not get close in absolute terms, I wonder how much fuel say a Barina with 4 people and a week's luggage (if it would fit!) would use... :p

AT www.fuelwatch.com.au theres a good review of how 4 people and their luggage on a long highway trip get better economy out of a manual SV8 than a V6 Camry Auto.

Even in Auto the economy is pretty bloody good - I must say much better than some of the guys I worlk with who drive big Landy's.. Who only have 4. whatever engines but their cars weigh a shitload!!

Anyway around town (Canberra 50K round trip to work) - I get anywhere from 340k-430k out of a tank. Average around 12-14l/100 Average fill up about 55Litres.

Worst economy 27l/100 during and after Delco did my edit LOL!!!

Best trip filled up in the North of Canberra - Drove to Melbrourne filled up in Coburg. 2Adults, 2Kids and boot load of luggage avererage on the fwy sat on about 115.

So the article about the Camry vs SV8 is very true (although when I filled up in Coburg my fuel needle was about wrapped around teh "E")

M6 SV8. Around town I get around 17L/100km at a average speed of low 40s. On a recent trip to Sydney and back (from Canberra), the reading was 9.1L/100km. So, great on the highway cruising at (ahem) 110kmh but not so good punting around town.

G'day All,
I have a 2003 Berlina gen III wagon and I live in country WA so fuel is about $1.20L for BP ultimate (best we have). minimum trip we do is a 120k return, or a trip to perth is about 1300K return, we get about 10-10.5 l/100k at 110kml/h, on a trip to perth we usually sit on about 130klm/h and fuel consumption only goes up to about 11.5-12.2 l/100 l/100k. She is stock at the moment but when the mods happen it will all change. Get to the city though and it goes up to about the 17-20 l/100k. My father in law has a 2004 Gen III Calais in perth and he gets about 16 l/100k (drives a bit more easy on the old girl though)

You blokes must be a pack of dead set rev heads.

I get about 14 - 15 L / 100 km's around town on a bad week and 13 L / 100 km on a good week.

Driving to Melbourne on the Hume Highway, fuel use drops to somewhere around 8.3 - 8.7 L / 100 km's (depending on whether I am using the aircon or not).

Here's a tip that I almost forgot. I changed to Shell Optimax and noticed an improvement in fuel economy. The car seems to be a bit more responsive too. In my opinion, it's worth the extra 9 cents per litre because it seems to give better economy.

With a high comp engine (10:1) and knock sensors, I high octane brew should give better economy.

A certain black VY SS ute filled up with Opticrap and dropped 30rwkw on the dyno with the car feeling like a sack of shit. Drained out the fuel, filled up with Ultimate and 30rwkw magically reappeared and the car went back to normal on the road. For the record, the dyno runs were run on the same dyno by the same person on the same day.

My car drove like a sack of shit after filling up with Opticrap as well. Dropped 4rwkw and some timing and couldn't recover it after filling up with Ultimate. I ended up having to get G&D to do a retune to fix that up.

I am running a series 1 SV8 and around town I am getting 16 to 17 llitres per hundred. On a trip I get from 8.51 to 9.6 per 100. It doesnt matter how I drive around town, 16 is the best. On a trip it is great, cruise at 118KLM with short bursts to 160 passing without a drama. Only way to drop city use is to do a short trip at 90 plus will drop to about 13 to 14.

The Maloo M6 gets anywhere from 12L/100km - 17.5L/100km in town and normally averages 9.5-10L/100km on the highway.

Would say I get over 700kms from a tank if I stretched it!

I have a VY SS (Series 1) A4.

Was getting 10.0 - 10.5 L/100km on the hume freeway cruising at 114km/h. (Car fully loaded, wife, 3 kids and the boot full of luggage that comes with that etc...)

Around town was getting about 14 - 15 L/100km prior to getting it serviced at F1 Performance. Figures above are based on bog stock configuration.

At this moment the trip computer is saying 13.5 L/100km from a mix of driving around town in the outer suburbs.

Giving it a big run over to the SA border tomorrow night, will see what the hwy economy is like now. I now have a K&N filter and a ESA twin 2 1/2" cat back on it.
