BLOWER LEADS LION TUNER CHARGE
By Mark Fogarty - Page 18 - Motor Magazine - October Issue
------------------------------------------------------------------
Holden is planning a belated blitz on the booming hot tuner market with a range of performance parts for Commodores, led by a supercharger for the Gen III V8.
The factory-backed blower kit, revealed in the June issue of MOTOR, is undergoing final trials ahead of an early 2005 introduction.
In dyno tests, the force-fed 5.7-litre LS1 had produced 340Kw and 600Nm and the flywheel. The low-boost conversion has been tuned for bottom-to-mid-range end response rather than outright power, which has been wound back from 380kW achieved in early tests.
It's understood the kit will initially be offered as an HSV-endorsed upgrade for the Coupe 4, before becoming available across the Holden V8 range. It will also be offered as a retro-fit hot-up for older Gen III-powered models.
The kit has been developed for HSV by PWR Performance Products (as in the race team), which will also supply other HSV-branded components like race-inspired brake and suspension kits.
The American-made blower will herald a range of aftermarket performance parts to be developed and distributed through a new division, likely to be known as HSV Tuning, which will eventually offer a wide range of HSV, HRT and Holden Motorsport-branded go-faster bits for late-model Commodore models.

Good to see, but i bet it has the matching HSV price tag to boot.

Rumour has it that the entry level kit will be around $10K for what is effectively somewhere near 260rwkw. One bar MAP sensor and standard MAF are all retained. It is a low boost version of the Magnacharger Eaton kit from the US.

so looks like HSV are moving into the "unsophisticated" aftermarket business after all.. in any event this is significant news (for HSV) finally they get it. Dunno if $10k for that kind of package is good value however by the time you get to changeove price with discounting, and can easily build this into the lease costs, perhaps........

Doesn't really matter if its a good product, it works, or has any inherent value. Put a HSV badge on it, and they will be lining up. Over 10 years of selling cars has already proven that!

Look, good on them. They have known all along about the lucrative aftermarket upgrades available, but one has to ask the question, how long will it be before the "behind the scenes establishment" put the stoppers on it. I mean, selling a kit that tranforms mere mortal cars into fire breathing supercars is not what they would call "politically correct". I think there would be too many complaints for Holden to sell it as an aftermarket upgrade. Yes, do it through HSV or something similar for new cars, and make it sell as a package with upgraded brakes / suspension etc and they will probably get away with it. The problem today is all the detractors have the loudest voices. People that think something is a good idea are usually quiet about it, people who think something is NOT a good idea usually voice their complaint very loudly, it's just human nature. The do-gooders actually think they are doing just that, if they knew we thought they were tossers they would be offended

True Tuna, sad but true. I still think HSV's are a good package as a complete car, but like you I think there are is better value to be had when purchasing aftermarket products. If I was going to spend 10k on a supercharger I would want the best value I could get, and that would probably be your product rather than HSV's.

You think politicians give a damn about what HSV and FPV do with cars?
Thats just car company media spin used to disguise the bottom line "No Dave, our new Interceptor ABC doesn't make any profit, so we'll tell em Johnnie Howard stopped us, and keep the unwashed happy, ok?"
The interesting thing with this kit will be the warranty. Say you put the HSV kit on your new SS. Who takes over the warranty of the vehicle should it, say, get some bad fuel and detonate a piston? Can't see Holden wanting a bar of it. Can't really see HSV wanting to get involved either. The dilemma here is that buying what is perceived to be a factory part, at premium dollars, folks will expect some sort of warranty...

Looks good at least if you wanted to buy a HSV you have that option and warranty to boot :D
I wouldnt want to see the insurance price though :(

when they are available to all gen 3s, retro etc it will have to be done through dealers, fitted by apprentices.

Hmm. Id seriously look at buying a HSV with one of these.
a PD is $10k easily so getting it factory fitted for that is cheap. Once you have it there is no reason you cant bump up the boost a little and with edit and some work 380+ wouldnt be too hard. I wonder what gearbox its going to run?? 4L80-E?
I guess another advantage for the more conservative people, is with this package you still retain your factory warranty.
Edit: Sorry I didn't see this comment above.

Whose to say they even tune it? they could just have a base tune they reprogram in.
Or perhaps, the dealer outsources that work to a Tuner in the local area.

I see a few issues with the retrofit.
What will their warranty cover on a retro fit? What if you fit one to a clapped out LS1 and blow the motor, are they going to fix it?
A few on this forum have talked about the difficulty in getting ADR compliance. Can't imagine HSV selling non-compliant kits. How are HSV going to do it on a retrofit? Are the older models automatically ADR compliant if the current model is or will HSV have to do testing on each model VTII, VXI, VXII, VYI, VYII? Is it going to be ADR'd with HSV spec motor, exhaust and brakes and therefore a retrofit will require these? I can just see it costing $10k for a HSV retrofit and $20k for a Holden retrofit including exhaust, brakes etc.
I'd buy a blown HSV Coupe 4, swap the Eaton for a Whipple and most cops or EPA on side of road wouldn't know you're running 500kw instead of 340kw - "this is one of those new HSV systems officer" and hand over the receipt for the blown HSV.

I'm just reading through the Motor mag and noticed the picture in the HSV blower article on page 18 is a Starr whipple kit. Further ammunition " What officer, you don't believe the receipt, then check out this picture in the magazine. See, I have the HSV system just like the one on the photo"
