Hey guys, I have a VT S that has many light scratches and marks in the clear coat.

I was wondering if it is possible to take itto someone and get them removed somehow?

I have heard conflicting stories regarding buffing ect.

Any help would be good.

I have some friends who have done some painting in their time and the opinion that they have expressed over the years seem to tie in with opinions expressed on this forum from time to time and that is that a buff is a magical tool in the *right* hands. Do NOT under any circumstances attempt to learn how to use one on your pride and joy (or let someone who doesn't know what they're doing anywhere near your car).

Find a reputable paint / panel shop and they should be able to fix it up a treat (providing that it hasn't got massive scratches on it). Depending on where you are located some people on this forum may be able to suggest a decent shop.

Alternatively, Maguire's Scratch-X (sp?) gets a very good recommendation from various sources, it might be worth trying that if the scratches are only slight.

Don't know what area you live in but if you find a good car detailer in your area you can get most small marks buffed out of your paint. The "conflict" you hear about is probably the fact that most guys only recommend using a buff if you have experience. It is very easy to stuff the paint and get swirl marks or burn it if you don’t know how to use one. It is an area that is best left to the experts. ;)

Im just South of Wollongong.

There are a few small local shops in my town, but I dont know how great they are.

What would it cost to get the whole car done?

Also, I was driving past a golf club today and got nailed by a gold ball, it left a nice dent above the right wheel.

I hear the Club has insurance for these accidents, would the entire panel need replacing?

Generally Golf Clubs have insurance that cover this type of thing. Paintless Dent repair (PDR) do wonders so Im sure you will not need a new guard.

Hopefully you reported it to the club straight away. If not, do it as soon as possible. (early tomorrow.)

Having said this, I borrowed my Bro in laws car some years ago for a trip to Canberra. I got nailed by a ball whilst driving past a golf club. I actually got the ball and took it to the office and explained what happended. They took my details then sent me a letter saying bad luck, they wouldnt pay, take it to court. :booty: I decided to pay for the window myself. I guess it depends on the golf club!!

Well, I took it to the local smash repair and he said it would be too much work to get the dent out.

He also said hed have to repaint the guard and bonnet or something....

So now Im stuck.

He reckons there are guys who will come around to your house and suck them out somehow???

Yeah, they are usually quite good - I have had damage (shopping trolleys, tree branches etc) rubbed out by them. But they can only do it if there is no paint damage - otherwise, you will need a spray. Try looking for Dent-ists, Ding Doctor, Paintless Dent Removal, Ding-goes etc on the net

best thing 2 do is call these guys that do dent removale, know of a few in syd , and they do a good job, just check ur yellow pages, as fare as buffing goes, i agree with every 1 else, get an EXPERT 2 do it, ive been detailing 4 15 years and have seen some shocking jobs, the shine might b there, but the swirl marks are shocking, nothing worse than a gorgeous, newish paint and swirls all over it. by the way if the detailer knows wat he is doing, he will quote the car once he see it.

cheers :)

Does it really work on light scratches in the clear?

I have always stayed away from such products, thinking they were scams.

your saying scratches in the clear coat why the hell buff might as well take an axe to the paint you dont need to buff light scratches out off a clear coat yes if its deep through the clear coat try mothers carnauba cleaner wax made for the exact job your explaining or mothers scratch remover for deeper scratches remember this detailers are not tradesmen panelbeaters are. not many recommend meguirs.

Yes meguiars actually does work. And yes, many people do actually recommend it!

If you don't believe me, buy some and try a little bit on an inconspicuous area on your car. You will be amazed at the results. The trick is to apply it in little sections, wait for it to dry and then buff it off with terry towel. You must ensure that you press and rub very hard on the paint. Meguiars guarantees that it will take out more scratches than it puts in.

The only prob with this product is that it takes a long time. I spent a whole night on my bonnet and it's still got fine swirls in the bonnet. You can use it to do the whole car, but you will have to dedicate a whole week to it. Anyway, just try it out and you will see what I mean. As long as the scratch doesn't go through the clear coat, you will be able to make it better. If it's a deep scratch in the clearcoat, you might not get rid of it completely, but it will make it A LOT BETTER!

Let us know how you go.

Thanks for the reply's.

I actually gave it a good clean and wax, it looks much better, but obviously teh scratches are still present.

Can these products be applied to a car that has been waxed or should there be nothing in the scratch grooves?
