Hi,
My car is just about to come out of warranty - holden just ran an oil consumption test on it and have said that it passed and there are no issues. Its used Mobil 1 since day 1 and has 50,000kms on the clock. Its driven fairly sedately (many a point lost in days gone by so I'm a bit more subdued now!) but after 7,000ks, the oil on the dipstick is just above add.
I've read posts here which state people have had no oil useage using mobil 1. Is this something I should be concerned about and following up seems as my warranty is about to expire or is it fairly standard for oil to be used?
Also, does anyone know how to reset the service indicator? Its flashing 50,000 but was serviced just before 50,000 and its annoying the @#$ out of me!
Thanks in advance!
Kind Regards,
David.

I am only going by memory but.
* switch ignition off
* Hold down both trip computer buttons together.
* Turn ignition on while still holding the buttons for about 3 seconds.
* Press the mode button until the service due screen appears on the display
* Press and hold the up and down arrows again for 3 secs till u hear a
beep.
* Release both buttons and then switch off ignition.

I am sure the reasons for excessive oil usage have been discussed previously.
What i can tell you is that at 20,000 km i had a complete rebuild. Am not technical but believe this was piston , ring etc related. At 30,000 i had another one. At 50,000 km (i.e at the warranty period) they gave me a completely new engine. And i mean NEW !! Since then.....68,000 kms i have put no more than 2.5 ltrs in per 10,000 km. Before that i was doing over 3.5 ltrs.
I could mention i have had 3 new clutches but that is another thread !!!!

On a new engine I have used 1 full litre in 10,000 K....I consider this quite normal consumption. :)

On a 77,000k engine I have never put a drop in between services.
That's with 5 thou oil/filter changes and using Mobil 1 since 75,000.
btw: Why didn't the servicing dealership reset your service reminder?

I am the only driver of my car and check frequently.
Its possible that as I change oil every 5000 k insead of 10000 k there is no oil usage.
I also use full synthetic after the 10,000k service.
What's the consumption figure after 5,000km where they'll replace/rebuild the donk? 1l, 1.5l?
Also, what determines whether you get a rebuild or a new engine? Luck of the draw? Whether or not the service manager's having a good day? :)

Some guys on here use Mobil 1 and use a bit of oil, but as Markone2 says, all engines will use oil......worry when it doesn't!!
less than a litre (I think full to add on the stick is around 1 litre) in 7,000 km's is not to bad for the LS1........
rebuild material is 2.5 litres in 5,000 I believe (Holdens yardstick).

Mine hasn't used 1 drop since I purchased admittedly oil change was at 1,000k,6000 , 10,000, and every 5000 k onwards up to now (33,000)

The instructions on how to reset the service reminder are in your vehicles handbook, I have to do mine and I was reading it the other day.

Please explain HRT Stroker. I am not yet convinced
that those of us with LS1's that don't guzzle oil
should be concerned?

I have built many an engine in my time, some have used oil from new, some not. 25000k on a replaced engine in the VX, 5k oil and filter change (Magnatec and Nulon) it does not use any oil, like none, didly squat, zero, zilch, even on a 2k trip to Melbourne and back in 2 days, nothing.....
Just my 2 bobs though.
Cheers.
