Hello all! I've got a VT 5.0LT Manual, its HSV enhanced with 195kw. Just wanted some Ideas on how to get around the 250kw @ the flywheel?

It has cold air induction, and I'm planing to get a performance exhaust (dual 2.5") with high flow cats and Pacemaker extractors.

Any sugestions would be apreciated!

Buy an LS1....

Prob work out to be cheaper also than doing say Heads and Cam on your VT...

Exhaust and tune on LS1 = roughly 300fwkw...

Jeez not everyone can afford or wants to get an LS1... As nice as they are, he asked for how to get his VT 5.0 to 250 not how to get an LS1 to more KW. Now what you would need with those other mods would be raising the compression to 9.5 up to 10 depending on what fuel you want to use. Grab a Crane 278 cam and some mild head work. If that doesnt get you there, then you could always opt to forget all that stuff and get it blown with a M112 Eaton which could be the easiest way. Or to go for a 330ci bottom end. And at that much power, you will also need to get some new injectors, something like 23lb injectors should be sufficient. Even the 355ci option from COME is a good way to go. Many different ways and its up to you. Also dont forget that to strengthen the clutch to be sure you dont kill it. And dont forget to get it all custom tuned! Cheers :)

Thanks mate...Its nice to get a answer on what I asked! I have consided a 355ci C.O.M.E. engines stroker, I had a 383ci in my Calias Director that I sold. It was nice! What do you think of the benifits of a modified mass airflow meter?

Thanks Giriftine!

Welcome to the forum HSV ENHANCED VT!! :)

1. Don't fark with your MAF, it won't help you at all.
2. Leave the HSV Cold Air alone, it works well. (Give the _ _ Induction gear a miss)
3. Start with the basics, clean injectors, K and N air filter element, new NGK V Groove plugs and check that your Leads,Cap and rotor arm are in good knick.
4. Run the thing on Premium fuel to get the best out of the HSV knock sensor setup.

Then consider a custom exhaust, Pacemaker make a great set of 1 5/8 primary try Y headers, get them HPC coated for underbonnet heat. Use your original cats, they are 1.8 litre capacity and flow as good as aftermarket ones, just get the inlet and outlet pipework inceased to 2.5 inch diameter.

Cat back exhaust size should be 2.25 inch for a mild setup, especially if its an auto, go too big with the stock manifold and you'll loose low end torque. Your car already has HSV headers and twin 2.25 exhaust which arent bad. If you change the cam and manifold then go twin 2.5"

If you are gonna crack the top end only get yourself a VN group A mainfold and a crane 284 or 286 cam, do this after the exhaust work and get it all tuned with the Kalmaker software which uses the more than up to the job standard computer unit.

in the end the main questions are two:

1. What do you wnat from your daily driven car in terms of drivability and economy?
2. How much do you honestly want to spend? Speed is just a question of money, how fast do you want to go???? :D

Enjoy your car, I have a soft spot for them too!!!

( I know someone who has a nice 201 rwkw Senator for sale...... ;) )

I'm after about 200rwkw, and its about 50% highway and 50% street use.

No offence man but what Dunny said is right. I had a VT 5 litre 5 speed and spent $$$ doing Cam and Unichip etc... played with exhausts etc... At the end of the day it got me nowhere. I did diff gears aswell to try and help but it is just a heavy underpowered car. It was very frustrating as the shop involved told me I would get certain power and I didnt. Its not about not being able to afford an LS1 and thinking that LS1 owners are co(ky or whatever, at the end of the day if you can sell your car and pay like an extra $5k to $6k to get an LS1 then it would be a cheaper source of power. A blower will cost you big $$$$, Stroker will cost you big $$$ LS1s are lighter and for little $$$ get big Hp. I was in the same boat and I didnt want to sell it but I figured it the best option.

If you are hell bent on keeping it then maybe look at some of the following;

* Get your MAF and Throttle Body Ported.
* Decent exhaust as you said, keep your old cats, just get they opened up.
* Headers as you said.
* Starr have a great Manifold for the VT and they are selling them off alot cheaper than they used to.
* Camshaft, dont go to big, mine got killed with a big cam. Make sure you get a new one and dont get talked into a Regrind of yours, I made that mistake.
* As mentioned above, get some comp into it! Shave the heads a bit which will go with the Cam well.
* You may have to get a Unichip or Wolf3D or something to tune the thing.
* Get some 3.73 diff gears into it! Not so good for highway driving but good bang for your buck.

I hope all goes well.

I believe dual 2.5" is too big for the 5 litre - something about backpressure !! - I looked at going the blower route for my 5litre but after doing all the figures it worked out cheaper to go the LS1 - I put an LS1 and a 6spd gearbox, VY steering rack, monaro fuel system, bigger fuel lines, LS1 edit, pacemakers, 3" single system, etc into mine for the grand sum of $9400.00 - a couple of thousand under the cost of the blower, with similar power -

The easiest and cheapest way is to sell and buy an LS1, if keeping it I would go down the same path as was done with my previous HSV Senator 5000i, a 355ci stroker. However for a true 200rkw plus I would top it with the twin throttle body manifold from the Group A. The beauty of the 355 is torque, LOTS of it! :burnout:

GO THE EATON!

this man does a good job - http://www.marksworkshop.com.au

got me 228rwkw out of my 5.0. comes with heafty bottom end torque and a screaming blower whine when you hoof it :headbang: You would have to get yourself a bigger exhaust system to cope though.

Sure buy an LS1 if you want as it possibly would work out slightly cheaper, but a 300KW 5 litre and a 300KW LS1 are of course completely different animals. Its all down to personal preference in the end, i.e. do you want a torque monster or screaming top end power?

By the way, you don't necessarily have to go the piggy-back chip option. The 5.0 VT can be tuned with Kalmaker if you prefer, and if you go the blown route the **ichip will be useless anyway.
