I drive a VY Ute, just the base 3.8i model, it's got the 5 speed manual gearbox in it. When sitting on 100km/h in 5th gear the RPM's sits around 2400rpm, does this seem right ? I find it a bit high. My fuel consumption is around 11.4, this is mostly for freeway driving as I drive 40 mins to and then again back from work, and this again seems a bit high for a 3.8i V6?

Can anyone help or comment on this? Or does this all-sound normal ?

Only mod's I have done:
- 2.5" Cat back system
- 18" Wheels

Did you buy this second hand? If so you might find you have a smaller diff ratio in it...look under the car and see if you have a sticker or writing on the diff.I get 2400 in the auto SV8 ...it has 3.91 gears in the diff

Yes i did buy the ute second hand. I just popped under it and had a look at the diff. It shows 3:46:1 on the sticker, correct me if i'm wrong but i thought the base model ute came with 3:08 ratio and no lsd. Only the s pack onwards came with 3:46 and lsd.

Any body here have a VY 3.8i ? Where does your rpm's sit @ 100km/h in 5 th ?

I'm pretty sure i dont have lsd, Always one wheel madness

If you've got bigger rims, you're speedo is out - You need to get it recalibrated. Also I think what SV8VY is correct, standard they're 3.08 Diff centres. so it will rev higher than a stockie anyway and if the previous owner didn't get the speedo fixed after this mod, than it would have been out anyway!

Not sure what the exact ratio for 5th gear is but I would expect it to be approx 0.7:1 about the same as the auto's in o'drive. This would mean that the engine revs for 100 kph should be in the range of 1950 to 2100 RPM for 3.46 diff depending on the diameter of the tyres that the speedo was calabrated to. The revs your's is doing is what you would expect from a 3.9 diff.

Sounds about right to me. V6 5 speed Utes have 3.46 diff and 0.81 fifth ratio. Sedans got 3.08 diff and 0.70 fifth. My VX V6 S sedan used to sit on about 2100 rpm in fifth at 100km/h
