Hey,
I took my SV8 through some windy stuff this evening, and gave it a bit. (i do this one road all the time, its quiet and in a national park) and after about 10-15mins the normal quiet gearbox whine got extremly loud, sounded like i was reversing everywhere, just louder.
i stoped the car for 5 mins and it stoped whining, but it was making the noise even when in neutral as i gave it a rev.
does anyone know wot this could be?
I think the gearbox may have over heated..

I also get a whining noise whenever I "give it a bit."
Thought it was the auto, but turned out to be my wife.

It must be a factory defect, I have the exact same problem :)

Agree with SLE355. Or something else engine related.
Ask yourself what is turning when in neutral with potential to whine - bearings in PS, alternator, ac, two idlers. I had similar prob - tracked it with garden hose to ear (like a stethescope :D )
It would be the power steering pump, very common. Another Holden "in built" design fault. But Holden will tell you that nothing is wrong, just customer perception. You may be aware that a new pump was introduced on VZ's.
