Got a a4 in the VtII R8. The shifts have all of a sudden gone RS. 1st-2nd takes a week and it revs out before it shifts (flares). 2nd-3rd is almost as bad, twice it has hit the rev limiter when it has kicked back when overtaking or going from 80-110. I originaly thought it was the modified MAF ends so I changed it back to standard, no different. I tried a PCM reset and it didn't seem to do much, may be I missed some thing when I did the Idle relearn. It's done nearly 100 000km so I'm wondering if the auto needs a service or have the latest software loaded would help? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

sounds like a rebuild coming up. sooner rather than later before it chews itself totally.

I think you will find your modified maf ends are the culprit.Changing back to standard maf ends isn,t going to fix it , as the damage has already been done to the auto.
When the auto is fixed , put the standard maf ends back on.Otherwise the problem will come back again. If you want more power , see one of the sponsors and get an edit.

Maf ends + A4 = trouble

The MAF ends have only been on for the last 1200km (trip to adelaide and back) could it cause this damage this quick?

if it just the maf ends and not a complete 10% or so maf, shouldn't do too much. although should do edit or a shift kit if you keep them

what were the shifts like before fitting ? if a little slow and soft then the ends would have speed things up a little. a full 10% maf would have really damaged it. it also could have been about to go anyway at those high k's.

get a few quotes on a rebuild. also check around some wreckers for a cheap low K box from a wreck, if you can fit it yourself will work out cheaper.

need to do it soon since if somthing breaks it put metal right through the box and does much more $

Personally I don't know. However , look at it like this.

If you aren't the first owner, then maybe they had a set on it previously.Hence there was prior damage.Later you have put the modded maf ends on , and that plus the previous damage was enough to kill it in 1200 kms.

or

The transmission has done some work, afterall it is a VTII , and the maf ends were enough to finish it off.

Perhaps one of the transmission guys would like to comment.

I'm talking to Metro today to see what they say as it's still under extended warranty. It was owned by the owner of differential & transmission specialists S.A. I know he changed the diff from 3.07 to 3.73. I don't know is he touched the trans though. The ends were the dreaded SSI billet ends.

Well make sure the standard maf ends are on the car, otherwise you can kiss any warranty work on the transmission goodbye.

Got some info and some more ideas today. It goes into reverse and 1st the same as it always has so I think it should not be a line pressure problem. The other thing I noticed was that I think it is only the 1st - 2nd shift that is realy bad and the 2nd - 3rd shift is pretty normal (bad but not that bad). This makes me ask, could this be a solenoid failure?. One other thing that I forgot about was that when I went to take it out of the shed, just before we noticed the problem, it had a flat battery. The battery is a optima red top so I don't know why that would just go flat. Charged it up and it's all ok. I dont know if this could be related or I have a drain some where else.

Have just had tech2 on it and it has come back with 1-2 solenoid stuck or off. So it doesn't sound as bad as I first thought.

that should be ok to fix, don't have to pull the box out for that.

could do yourself, good luck

Have finaly got the car back from the dealer. They did a complete trans rebuild with new solenoids etc. All covered under warranty. :D . The only thing that they did pick up on is that there is a bit of a clunk in the diff. The mechanic thinks that it may just need to have the oil changed and new aditive added. If it's worse they will look into getting the diff done (under warranty). As long as they remember to put 3.73 gears back in there, not the standard 3.07. the diff change was done throu them.

Does any one have any sugestions what additive should be best run in the lsd.
