View Full Version : I'm a cold air junkie!!! Part 2....
Plan B

Welp! :D I’ve never been a big fan of the air intake set-up that usually comes with a Votech kit, so after running 130mph twice at WSID last Wednesday on normal pump fuel, I decided to get out the Junk again and make something a little more useful…. You guessed it…. It’s another $7.50 Paint Tray, with 2 x 100mm outlets back to the blower all using the stock OEM filter size.

Just a few clamps and a little Sika Flex around the joints and it should be ready to go....

Oh, and it lines up perfectly with my newest addition….

I kinda like it.... :)

The bonnet will be modified to use both scoops and is getting painted tomorrow. I’ll post it up when it’s all done.

Impressive result there Mr B, kinda like Walkinshaw meets Vortech..........match made in heaven!!!!!
You got a bit of bush mechanic in you a b , how do you recon your little bristol tray would work if you ran it straight to throttle body, on a N/A motor?Any better than a OTRCAI I wonder, TTSCAI(thru the scoops...........).Bit of paint and that will be one very , very fast and not to shabby looking ute mr B,

Thanks guys! Maybe we can dub this one; "Over The Rocker Cover Under The GTO Bonnet Cold Air Intake". Or; "OTRCUTGBCAI" for short…. :D
Though being what it really is, a paint tray and all, I’d say ROTA COTA ® —has already got a “painted” on it! :D
All good fun for a weekend around the house. Never did get to do that painting I promised the wife either!

Hi Keen, I once found some fencing wire for the forum owner in Canberra one day! So I guess I'm qualified

I like the cooler setup.
I'd say that arrangement would cut a lot of piping length out compared to a "traditional" front mount setup.

I like the cooler setup too. Bit of lateral thinking (wish I had thought of it).
I like the cold air setup and is great for dry days. Not sure on how that will go in the wet though.
Noticed you have gone to a crank driven setup as apposed to the power steering pulley. Interesting.

The intercoolers design is my own and it works great. It was a relatively cheap to make prototype thing stitched together at the right price by my good friend Ray, at Liverpool Radiators. I just haven’t had the time or the will at this stage to change it. On the move the logged intake air temps are always ambient and there is absolutely no pressure loss with my current horsepower level before and after the cooler. This is also reflected in the pulley ratio I use…. I really shouldn’t be pumping as much air as I do, but I do, so less load on the blower and engine for me with plenty left in the tank, it really drives away from the basement for a little 346ci engine. Crisp!
As for the rain in the air intake; I’m not that bothered… It’s actually good for the engine, if it ever gets there. :)

I never had a problem with the power steering set-up and at the time when using it, I was producing some pretty good horsepower. Though after experiencing the CAPA Crewman for some time, this upgrade certainly won me.. It's good.... real good!
John, I'll be down in Melbourne next week and I'm planning on bringing the ute... We should hook up and compare notes hey?

That looks really cool! I was wondering tho, would the fact that it's sitting on top of the engine mean that the "cold" air is actually getting heated when the engine heats up quite a bit, thus losing a bit of the effectiveness it was originally designed for?
And yeah, what about if it rains?

Plan B that looks fantastic, great use of scoupes
Any chance of some pics of under the bonnett to see how you actually cut the section out, as they dont have the holes cut out if I'm not mistaken...
That would be great .
Keep the thinking cap on as your ideas inspire others.....

Much more refined for the power.
I love N/A stuff, but there is a limit with what you can do with drivability over performance with the current availability of aftermarket LS1 components, particularly if cost is a concern.
This car is a true street car…. The exhaust system is super quiet like stock… It actually has two stock rear resonators, mufflers and cats! Anyone could drive this car… It also likes 6th gear at super low speeds (like 70k’s) all with the stock 3.7’s diff ratio…
It’s tuned well and it’s super quiet…. I like that! :)
Take it to the track though and it’s amazing!

That looks great!!!!!
CONGRATULATIONS ON THE 10sec pass!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What did you use to cut out the holes, were they easy to come out? Is the pannel spot welded in ?
Keep the pics comming of your induction set up when you finish it!!!
Thanks again
