View Full Version : NSW Cop Cars running on LPG??
I thought this was really weird, but i pulled up at the traffic lights in dee why tonight behind a ford cop car (non highway patrol car) and noticed a "LPG" Sticker on his back numberplate.
Ive never noticed cop cars running on LPG before, is this a cost saving exercise thet government is on due to the high fuel prices??
since AUs they have been as far as I know?
I dont think they do on the holdens
from what i was told by a ford dealer today was that you will not be able to receive a MKII Falcon XT before the new year because all the cars are going to the police force, and i think telstra has got a few too.

Yes you are quite right there are many running on LPG.
I have a few friends in the force and its funny as they say sometimes they see a quick car on the road and impossible to catch up

Many moons ago the Vic police started using LPG ( Late 80s ). Given how tight ar$ed they are, it must have been a disaster because it didn't last long. Mind you, they trialled 6 cyl Skylines ( no problem there ) and 4 cyl Boxy Magnas !! Even though it's cheaper, I would think the cost of installation will outweigh the savings as they don't keep the cars that long.

The Falcon Xt's Use The Lpg This Is Currently On A Trial Basis And Is Not Yet Approved By Nsw Police To Be Used Indefinetly. All Holdens And All Other Make Cars Are Still Using Regualr Petrol.

Dunno whats worse getting chased by a drivable gas BBQ or getting chased by a new Magna.

They have had them for a while.
60% of all sedans will be LPG in the next 2 years or so.
You will be seeing a lot more Falcon GD cars than Commodores in the coming future.

i dont see the point of government cars running on LPG - without paying the tax on both, i am sure there is very little saving, especially with the higher consumption on lpg. My guesses are 40c per litre for LPG (no GST = 36c per litre) petrol $1 per litre (without excise or gst) 50c per litre

I thought that most government cars actually were bought & then sold for around the same figure (ie no sales tax etc on purchase + huge fleet owner discounts). Having said that, resale prices on LPG vehicles are usually lower - due to reduced demand. So any savings that they make from reduced running costs on LPG is surely going to be outweighed by reduced sale price.
Maybe situation will change if petrol prices skyrocket but from experience, I will NEVER AGAIN have an LPG vehicle

A layman’s guide to devaluing a good late model used car…Add LPG….these car are instantly recognizable around Brisbane Auction houses by the large RTV sign on the front window..(return to vender)…
How much tax does the Gov't (the dirty bathplugs) pay on petrol fellas? You can bet your boots it's zip! The 48 cpl is only for us suckers.
The Falc is a factory conversion and it is not dual fuel so i would imagine it is a well sorted set-up. I think the Commodore gas conversion is done by HSV?

Would it really matter, I mean if they do pay the tax, they'd be paying it to themselves, it's like you owning a resturaunt and paying yourself for your own dinner.

My Mum's work (federal government) only get's about 5% discount of fuel. They don't buy their cars either, they are leased for 12 months or 10,000 kmp/h.

i was filling up today at a servo on King Georges Rd at roselands and noticed a marked falcon pull up. The driver stopped at the petrol bowser and then reversed to the LPG unit.
Thought it was odd but the rego plates had the red diamond on them - pretty sad really because anything can now outrun a gd's car. Suppose thats the idea - now pursuits are off limits for anyone but highway cars and urgent duties are being scheduled according to the order in which cars respond to the call, ie first call to acknowledge a job in NSW goes on an urgent run whilst backup cars make their way quickly but without expediting.
maybe they should get prius'. Glad i work elsewhere now.

It is very curious. This LPG thing. There must be a reason why they are doing it? Personally I wouldn't have thought the fuel savings would have been a great deal. As GD cars don't do the Km to really make it pay, they don't keep them that long, resale is worse, emergency fuel supplies at larger police stations are I belive all unleaded, lesser performance, less fill up points etc.
Maybe its part of reducing Australias need for ULP dependance or Ford not giving fleet discounts as sweet on non LPG XT's..
