Hi guys,

Wanted to get opinions on something I'm experiencing on my SS at the moment (and pretty much since I picked it up brand new.)

When taking off in 1st and when below 1500rpm in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, there is a faint 'scraping' noise (can't think of another way to describe it) that sounds like it's coming from the vicinity of the clutch. You can only hear it with aircon off and radio off.

I told the dealer about it at the first service and they said that it was normal for these clutches/gearboxes.

It just doesn't sound right to me - anyone else experienced anything similar? I couldn't find any posts that pertained to my exact issue here (lots of posts on replaced clutches etc tho :P) , thus why I'm asking.

Also, if I'm idling at a set of lights or something with the clutch in, no probs.. if I let the clutch out (in neutral obviously), I can hear the noise again.

You may just be hearing the bearing race on the throwout spinning. Normally you can't hear it because it's under pressure with your foot on the clutch, or the engine is revving. At low revs when all is quiet, as the pressure comes off the bearing race as you release the clutch, it will spin briefly in free air. As long as the clutches engages/disengages freely and smoothly it shouldn't be an issue. If it starts to rattle with your foot on the clutch or the clutch starts to feel heavy or not engage/disengage smoothly it is definitely a problem.

Thanks for that - hopefully nothing to be too concerned about then :) Just never had it on any of the previous manuals I've owned.

Ive got that noise in my SS. Definately normal as I have heard it in every M6 that I have been in. Not very noticeable unless the radio off and waiting at the lights with the clutch out.

Cheers
