I'm after opinions on "running in" an engine after a rebuild (pistons etc from holden)

I just got my ute back after its rebuild.. with new pistons etc.. what sort of km's would you expect to put on it to consider it "run in".. as well as what sort of driving.. I.e take it easy for 100km then give it some....

The car is going in to powertorque for a mafless tune & diff gears as soon as it has "run in"

Cheers

Ive been told to give the engine a bit of load (once its warmed up) but not too much load and not for extended amounts of time, and then vary the revs a bit.

When I had mine rebuilt I took it for a drive (showed no mercy), then 200kms later did an oil change myself, and 2000kms holden did a service (oil change)

check how much metal is on the end of your sump plug (magnetic), there wasnt heaps on mine but there was a bit.
cheers

I don't mean to take over but I was just looking for info on how to run in a rebuilt engine and saw this thread.

A friend has an EA fairmont (bomb) and got his engine rebuilt due to a blown head gasket. Since he has had it the thing has been thrashed non-stop and reved very high. Im wondering how much damage this would cause. At 2000km it seems to be going very sluggishly.

Don't redline it for 1000k, don't sit on the highway in 6th for hours........apart from those rules, flog it like a red headed stepchild.

I'd hand it over to Powertorque now. Some time on the dyno during tuning might be the very thing to promote good ring seal and help bed everything in. Just get them to do do some variable load and rev runs to help bed stuff in a bit first.

If you do decide to wait for a bit and an oil change before you tune, just be sure to mix it up a bit, not just cruising around. throw in some higher rev range stuff as well. Find some hills and climb them in varying gears (don't labour the motor though) ...find a few big boofy mates to fill the car up and take them for a good road trip as well....up hill down dale ...highway running tool. All this should help run the motor in nicely.

Just keep varying the loads and revs on the motor and remember that motors that get too much TLC during run in are never the best motors.
