From Cams

CAMS V8 Supercar Stewards today released their findings over the running of Race 3 at Symmons Plains, Tasmania on 14 November 2004, declaring David Besnard the winner, followed by Jason Bright and Mark Skaife.

The Stewards determined that race officials were in fact correct in their assessment of the situation in the first instance, but after considerable pressure from numerous sources in pit lane, they corrected the “perceived error” which resulted in the wrong driver receiving the chequered flag at the conclusion of Race 3.

The four cars (#50, Jason Bright, #23, David Besnard, #2, Mark Skaife, and #75, Anthony Tratt) made their stop and exited the pits before the Safety Car completed a lap of the circuit and reached pit lane, thus gaining a lap over the rest of the field in accordance with the rules.

Schenken instructed the Safety Car to wave other cars through and pick up the leader of the group of four, the actual race leader, David Besnard. It was at this time that the majority of teams in pit lane objected.

now what does this mean for the championship....

BigPond Grand Finale to decide V8 Supercar Championship Series: Bright back in contention
Release Date: 21/11/2004
Jason Bright has rejoined fellow Holden driver Greg Murphy on the V8 Supercar Championship Series contenders list going into the final round following the amendment of results from the third race at the Tasmanian Triple Challenge by the Confederation of Australian Motorsport.

The BigPond Grand Finale at Eastern Creek in Sydney from December 2-5 will now decide if Bright or Murphy can overhaul series leader and defending champion Marcos Ambrose in the final event of the 2005 V8 Supercar Championship Series.

The Tasmanian results were amended to award WPS Racing’s David Besnard the third race from PWR Performance Products’ Bright and Holden Racing Team’s Mark Skaife (see below).

As a result Bright was elevated from 18th to 8th position for the Tasmanian event at Symmons Plains Raceway, giving him an additional 36 points for the round and the championship.

It elevates him from fourth to third in the championship on 1816 points behind Kmart Racing’s Murphy, who lost six points having initially been awarded second in the third Tasmanian race, on 1825. Pirtek Racing’s Ambrose remains the championship leader on 1982 points.

how can such a big dollar thing get it so wrong
easy...this is a prime example of the whinging of teams having an effect on racing results, and officials not having faith in their equipment (timing)

the same stuff happened on channel 10 though

I thought what happened was the leaders pitted on the SC lap then the SC picked them up again

I thought what happened was the leaders pitted on the SC lap then the SC picked them up again
The footage they showed today on RPM showed what happened very clearly. The camera was showing the pit exit, and the leading 4 exited the pits, followed by the safety car which picked up Murph and the field coming down the track. after everything settled down, the field was waved through until Besnard was leading... After the teams complained, it was stuffed at the next safety car when the leadinf 4 were waved past putting Murph behind the safety car....

It was a brilliant (and lucky) move on behalf of WPS,HRT,PWR and Tratt to get them in and out in front of the safety car while the rest of the field slowed due to the yellows...

sounds like the no pit in sc lap should be back

sounds like the no pit in sc lap should be back I'm not a fan of that as it opens the door to other problems, such as s/c coming out near the close of the pit window and trapping cars out on the track.

The lesson to be learnt from this are twofold:
1: Officials need to trust their equipment and not listen too hard to team complaints while a race is on
2: When the yellows and s/c board are shown, the leader will acknowledge the yellow but not slow down too much unless he knows he is first on the track.
3: Officials to deploy the s/c quicker than they have been, although in this case it wouldn'tve made any difference.

As I said, they had a brilliant strategy on the run

A solution may be pit exit is closed at the moment the s/c boards are shown, and opens as the s/c goes through, although even this would have issues.

I'm keen for the 'no pitting during safety car period' rule as then it would have all drivers pittting under race speed and nobody getting an advantge from it. Would make it easier to follow whats happening on t.v. as well.

Haven't we been there and done that? Just means half the field pits after Lap 2, and the other half after Lap 3. Makes for boring racing, may as well eliminate pit stops.
