It looks as though Auckland will loose the V8 Supercars round, because of a decision by the Environmental Court.

http://xtramsn.co.nz/motoring/0,,6306-3879308,00.html
I had always felt, that new Auckland Mayor Dick Hubbard (anti car enthusiast) would block it, because it was an election platform issue over previous Mayor John Banks (proclaimed car enthusiast).
It will be interesting to see what develops, there are some very powerful supporters of the V8 Supercars in Auckland.
Myself, I would rather it be held on a proper race circuit perhaps on an upgraded Manfield. Or hasten the new circuits near Meremere and Taupo.

Interesting ...
It doesn't surprise me because Auckland IS A GRIDLOCKED CITY. Something that people seem to fail to understand. If a sparrow farts loudly half the place comes to a standstill . and then the other half stops to have a look. The only thing that I'm surprised at is that anyone ever thought that this idea would fly.

Agree totally, Traffic sucked when I last lived there in '94. I'm glad all I see of the traffic these days is south from the airport to Hamilton.
And on top of that they probably picked the worst place to run it.

Im ashamed to be a New Zealander as the wowsers in the Auckland resource consent board said it will be too noisey and the ammenities arent up to scratch. Even if it was approved the word is that the council were going to turn it down anyway. I hate to say it but if Auckland bid for it again, I hope the supercar governing body tell them to stick it. Perhaps if you Aussies want to come for a trip to Auckland for some "fun" you should pop over this week for the damned flower show.
I think we have a better chance of winning the second cricket test, winning the next netball series, or god forbid - the rugby world cup, than getting to hear the sound of V8's full song in our country after next year. We have turned into a bunch of politically correct left wing dropkicks that the world laughs at, remember the proposed fart tax for farmers?
Maybe I should just move to Aussie, dont worry I work hard and wont sponge of your guys welfare system. And I could even put up with how you guys talk funny!

Mate...Its a real shame...still, lets hope Wellington picks it up...no bureacrats down here! our district plan already allows for a street race, so no resource consent is required.
Do you always believe headlines? do you live in Auckland. Do you know that successive city councils and govt bodies( transit NZ) have sat on their fat lard arses for THIRTY years ignoring growing transport problems so that this city is now at a point of implosion. Its GRIDLOCKED.Do you know that the hardest person to employ in this city is a driver. A truck driver ... because they are leaving their jobs in droves over the stress of trying to get around the place.
Noise. bullshit. Its got nothing to do with it. its an 11 mile wide city on an ithmus with 1.4 million people trying to get from one side to the other on one major access way and that access way is what the promotors of this race wanted to limit for up to 6 weeks as they set up a race track. The closures for the actual event have nothing to do with it either IMO.

Get Real, this was a bloody terrible location for Aucklanders, at least for any one that had to travel to work basically anywhere in Auckland. One flat tyre or car out of petrol on the bridge and Auckland would have shut down. Greg Murphy should pull his head in, tosser does not even live in Auckland so what the F*** does he know about it and is bleating like a bloody sheep. That also goes for that prick Tony Cochrane, chairman of Avesco acting like some kind of bigshot bully boy telling us how we should run our city but not having to put up with sitting in the likely two-three hour traffic jams on the Northern or Southern motorways the first time some one runs out of gas.
Many people wanted the race just not on entrance/exit to the BUSIEST road in New Zealand
Sorry for the rant but all day all I have heard is that the council was wrong, Auckland is useless etc
Cheers Jay
jafa
lived in Auckland for six months, paltry transportation and traffic systems really considering the reasonable amount of people.
still, spending your money on the boats and waterfront made it a nice place for some :D

The problem was the location, not the city. In fact even the track layout was stupid. There are other locations around Auckland that could be used and the promoters were remiss in not having an alternate ready given the politics of this decision. Street racing is spectacular but if you look at the current races in Oz at Melb (crap V8 circuit) , Gold Coast (crap V8 circuit), Adelaide ( average V8 ciruit) the racing is compromised but they get massive crowds and Auckland had an opportunity to add to that with a decent race circuit but not the one proposed. Shame really but rest assured NZ will still have a race as AVESCO, Ford & Holden all understand the importance of the market and the fans....watch this space!

TC can get stuffed, if you had seen some of the comments he has made recently in the press over here you would think he was Hitler or some other dictator. Who the hell does he think he is, from his comments his IQ would be about 6 as he sure got a lot of people offside everytime he opened his mouth.

This is the mind set of the majority of Jaffas, i was born and grew up a jaffa, had kids and got the f$$$$ out 6yrs ago sounds like u need to too. I'm ashamed to be a jaffa over this.
Auck had plenty of time to designate another likely track that wouldn't cause as much disruption but no, like your comments, with heckles raised they would rather bitch. Not that jaffas care why the rest of N.Z. dont like them
"to preoccupied in their own self importance", I really hope that a city in the north Is has the balls to take this race on for us that are true motor racing fans.

It seems funny how the Americas cup sindicate got $50million of our tax payers money for ONE event, which only really benefitted Aucklanders, and the government wont help Manfield or Pukekohe at all for 6-7 years of supercars. :bash:
John Banks may be a dork, but at least he had an infrastructure vision for the future, I bet he's laughing at the moment. Who is the mayor of Auckland anyway? I hear the democratically elected mayor is the 2nd in charge?
Oh, and why did the council dick avesco around so long when mayor Hucker said on the radio last week the race wont happen? Seems they had allready made their mind up. Shame on Auckland council!!!!!
Auckland council announced today they want Auckland to be the cultural city of the world, they are having a big international cultural thingy all through next year, sounds exciting............. Western springs raceway will be next for the chop, its not cultural.
Hey, can anybody explain to me why-when you build a race track, when people build a house next door they can complain about the noise?

Actually, a street race at the Mount would be a boomer idea. Think about all the Port roads that aren't too busy during the weekend, most of them are wide, and don't obstruct the main traffic flow.
Just think, lying on the Mount watching the action below.
Might have a word with some of my influential Mount mates!
PS. Good idea to get out of AKL, I scream if I have to go up there, now.

Try reading up a bit on the situation before making your broad comments, I and many people did want the race just not where it was located, it has also just been pointed out to me that the biggest post/courier distribution facility for the North Island is right smack beside the proposed track making business and mail deliveries virtually impossible to deliver on time. Personally from your comments you have your head up your arse and are no great lose to Auckland or NZ
From What I have read AVESCO/TC where not interested in any other options around Auckland, Manakau and other places where suggested but for some reason AVESCO only seem to be interested in placing this event around Victoria Park. Any one who has spent any time in Auckland over the last 5-10 years would know that this is not a sensible location by any stretch of the imagination.
I have no reason to oppose this as I work from home and do not live anywhere near the proposed location but I have travelled over the bridge in the morning into downtown in the past and also down the southern motorway into town and do not envy anyone who does this trip daily, the southern is now basically blocked up to Mt Wellington (about 15 kms from downtown) and traffic just about stands still ALL day.

come on dont you think they would of thought of that, they would have just put up a set of traffic lights to allow the jaffa mail to get through. rain hail or motor-race. Heaven help the jaffas cause no one else will. especially now. :bash:

On the other hand you could say it is small town jealousy, the fact that Auckland has 1/3 the population of NZ, makes up 40 percent of the tax base, has the major port, airport and every week 400 more people from around New Zealand move into Auckland would suggest that the people calling Aucklanders Jafas are just morons with a penis envy complex.
Aucklanders tend to get criticised for things like asking for a fair or proportional (to population and tax paid) amount of government funding which at the moment does not happen.
Saying that the government has finally decided it is about time they actually spent some money (about 10 billion over ten years) on the roads as they realise that Auckland has basically ground to a halt, it has been calculated that this costs NEW ZEALAND about 1 billion a year (and growing) in lost productivity. A trucking firm recently published that upto five years ago each of their delivery trucks would average 12-13 trips across Auckland a day now they are lucky to manage 5 trips as they are stuck in traffic.
Hence the main bloody reason that a street race should not be situated on the exit /entrance to the busiest highway linking Auckland and the rest of New Zealand. I wonder who would be whinging when their mail, weetbix or magazines etc did not turn up in Mount Manginui on time for up to 7 weeks due to a race in Auckland.
Ohwell I suppose us Jafa would just be blamed again

Doesn't the geography of NZ mandate that the rest of the country looks up to Auckland? Doesn't that make Invercargill the A***hole of NZ and Wellington the Bellybutton? Scary part would be that it would probably make Waitangi the brains of NZ :)
Anyway to compensate if NZ lose out from 2006 what about we just add an extra 60 laps to Bathurst? Ah heaven just got sweeter!
