Hey. I currently have an AU XR6 and well Its just not doing anything for me. I want to get a VX SS and would like some opinions from those that own them and have driven them. How do they handle, what are they like performance wise, are they easy to mode and do they break traction easy?

Any advice would be much appreciated

Cheers

You would see it as a massive leap, make sure you get a 6 speed I'm dead set bored of my auto, I thought the ls1edit would fix that

They don't handle too bad stock actually, and would probably handle similar to your XR6. As far as performance, no contest. Are they easy to mod, do a search on LS1 Edit.

I drive a VX Berlina whereas my dad has a VX SS. Both have LS1's and are auto. My Berlina also happens to have FE2 suspension like the SS so its an interesting comparison. The things on the SS I like more are the interior ie the trim colours and style etc, basically the car looks better overall. The things I don't like compared to the Berlina is that the SS seems to ride quite rougher...prehaps it has harder struts in it over my car. The ride of it is the only complaint I have over my car. Everything else feels basically the same in terms of driving it.

Definately go the 6 speed - the stock auto box is shite for 'spirited' driving - it seems to get confused as to what gear it needs to be in. Handling isn't too bad but a bit too much body roll for my liking - nothing some swaybars couldn't fix if you don't want to lower it. Mine is stock auto and can hardly break traction at all (is mine a dud??? The old VN could no worries).

But with shift points and lines pressures recalibrated with the benefit of Edit ,has a nasty habit of leaving your average M6 driver goggle eyed and floundering at the starting gate ;)

The handling comparison may depend if the XR6 has rear independant setup. Have a drive of a VX and see what you think.

Maybe true at the 1/4 mile drag strip - but not the case on your favourite twisty mountain road or on the race circuit ;) Horses for courses!

Thanks for the replys :)

Ill be going for the auto, not a fan of manuals.

And yeah my car has the independent rear suspension.

If you can spring for the series II, it has a better rear suspension setup which overcomes the accelerated rear tyre wear.

I also have an auto which is not perfect but a lot better thanks to a ECM upgrade.

Have fun.

I would of thought an AU with independant suspension would be slightly better then the VXI. If it's a VXII it would be very close.

I had an au xr8 auto. Current drive is a vy II SS auto wagon. Power wise there's no contest the SS kicks its arse. The xr8 auto IMHO is a better gearbox. And the xr8 out handles the SS, but mine is a wagon, and I base this opinion on my favourite stretch of road, Bells Line of Road. Buy the SS you won't be disapointed

Isn't the Fords auto the main reason SS's eat XR8s? 2.39 first gear = 90+ km/h in

Ratios aint everything, who am I kidding.........

No I meant more from a day to day live with point of view. It shifts nicer, seems to know when your giving it some, just seemed a nicer car to drive in that respect

And yeah my car has the independent rear suspension.Do yourself a favour when you get it and go see Doughboy Performance, Street Tuna on this forum. He'll edit the PCM and recalibrate the auto for you which will make your driving experience something to behold.

I agree - the rear suspension control links on the VXII (and later) would be worth having.

Am I correct in saying that the VX II also introduced the fix for the piston slap problem?

Has anybody heard of piston slap problems and associated engine rebuilds on VX II and later LS1's? If so, has a further factory mod been introduced, what does it entail and when did this appear? VY II or VZ?

PAHThey changed the pistons in the VYII.

I've got a VXII M6, and love it. I have driven an AU XR8 a few times (I know you have an XR6 and guess you have driven an XR8), and I have found the VX a lot better car to drive.

I haven't driven an A4 but can tell you traction can be an issue in an M6 if that is one of your concerns. There is always the option of leaving the T/C on.

The only fault I have found handling-wise is for the front end to push and slide when under power through tight corner, but this only happens when really pushing on (eg at a racetrack).

Don't forget to budget for edit too....

I thought they put the teflon coated pistons in the VY Series 1.

Is this correct? If not, what changes were made to the VY Series 1?

They went to the 'Coated Pistons' early 2002, then changed the pistons again in June '03, which continued on into the VYII. The June '03 revision was to the Gudgeon Pin they were still the coated pistons. They have changed again in the LS2 think I read somewhere that they are now a fully floating Gudgeon Pin.

I have a series 2 vx ss manual and I love it :D upgrades include CAI, maffless tune, full exhaust, rip shifter, 3.9s and shimmed LSD. 250 kw at the wheels done at f1 performance. It will chirp 3rd no worries! Got lwrd springs in it at the moment but upgrading the rest soon. Needs a new clutch, better brakes etc etc..... it never ends! Daily driver, recomend them to anyone! Good luck mate and get rid of that ford!

I had a VXII for 3 years and it served me very well. top car. Control link suspension is well worth having as well. The exhaust though...sounds very quiet but some like that, including me..lol.

I bought a VXII SS a couple of months ago and absolutely love it!
