Does anyone know how the 215i compairs to the VT I HSV GTS 220i in rwkw or hp ??
Or does anyone know what is different between the two motors.

Got this from HSV
VT GTS 220i:
Engine : 5.7-Litre. V8 See Also:
Transmission : 6-speed manual (standard)
4-speed automatic (optional)
Power : 220kW at 4,800rpm
Torque : 475Nm at 3,600rpm
VR GTS 215i
Engine: 5737 cc V8
Power: 215 kW @ 4800 rpm (288 hp)
Torque: 475 Nm @ 3600 rpm (350.5 ft/lb)
Fairly even, though from what I have heard the VT block is a lot stronger than any generation before it. Not sure if that is true, but I have been told it from a few sources ... sorry I cant be of more help

You should be able to easily blow away a VT1 GTS 220i because the VTs weigh a lot more than the VR.

That sound correct in theory, but I don't beleive, back in the day for both cars, that this was the case in reality. I beleive that both are very heavy vehicles, I think even the VR's were heavier than any of the GENIII vehicles.
I do know that at least from Motor's perspective, the VTI GTS was the fastest HSV/Holden ever at the time with a top speed of 252kph, I think 0-100, both of those vehicles were around the 6.2-6.6 sec bracket depending on day, driver, and testing criteria.
I think the VT I GTS is a pretty damned good overall package now though given they go for around 30k

VR GTS 215i: 1600Kg
VS GTS 215i: 1648Kg
VT GTS 220i: 1740Kg
VT GTS Gen3: 1723Kg
Above information was found at Carsales Research Site. Then Gen3 GTS was lighter than the VT GTS by 17Kg. However the VR/VS GTS was is lighter than the Gen3 Cars.
The thing that a lot of people dont realise about these old Strokers is that they make 400nm @ Idle (400nm being what the 185i 5Ltr Clubbys made Peak!). They then peak out at 475Nm @ 3600Rpm.
So you have a CRAP load of Torque from the word go. This is very different from the LS1's as they do not have near as much torque (stock) this low!!!

I was also told that the VT series V8 came with a roller cam, does anyone know if the VR 215i has a roller cam to ?

No roller cam for the pre VT cars.........

AMEN!!!!!!!
Nor up high.
Mine puts out over 650Nm from 3400 to 4500 RPM and over 500Nm between 2000 and 5800 RPM. Really runs out of breath at 6000 RPM though.

Could I ask roughly how many $$ did that all set you back?
Could I ask roughly how many $$ did that all set you back?
Including all the little bits not mentioned such as billet roller rockers [$790] US floating gudgeon pistons [$1450] new lifters [$700] new pushrods to suit the new deck height [$350] steel flywheel & clutch kit, gaskets, trueing block, line boring, engine dyno, etc, etc ,etc there was no change out of $20,000 and then some more [but don't tell the missus that!!!!!!!!!]
Also, I already had some of the bits such as the extractors, Starr manifold and 90mm MAF and was able to sourch quite a bit of the other stuff at good prices [contacts in the business ;-)]
